I'd be willing to throw a manual into my protege also if possible Could they quote me on a price? Bloom, not sure exactly where that is but I've been wanting a tranny swap for a long time
Also, do you think I'd be able to sell my auto to anyone after the swap? It was rebuilt about 10k miles ago.

I JUST finished a successful swap on my BP equipped sephia using a G series 5 spd (originally had a Mazda FA4A-EL auto) and I took TONS and TONS of pics.
Assuming you are patient and don't mind waiting for the right trans and parts AND do the work yourself, the swap would cost you about $200 - $300. It cost me $165 (trans has 80k and shifts nicely) to get just about everything for the swap (except the center console, shift knob and 5 speed ECU) from Florida. My friend found a car that was in a rear end collision and took all the parts off of it and shipped it to me via Fedex (STUPID Fedex delayed the shipments by a day TWICE and damaged the end tin cover on the trans. I beat it back into shape.. but still, it's very unprofessional behaviour on their part). Shipping came to about 70 bux total. The swap would have cost me just $235 but i accidentally messed up the pilot bearing and had to get a new one for $10. That took the final cost to $245.
If you are doing this on a BP equipped car using a G series trans, you will need:-
- 5 speed trans
- Two bottom trans mount brackets. (the rubber engine mounts themselves are same for auto and 5 speed)
- One top trans mount bracket (just the part that fits on the trans, the rubber part and the part that goes on the chassis are same for both trans)
-Intermediate shaft
- Complete driver side driveshaft (passenger side is same for both trans)
- Pedal Assembly from 5 speed (just the clutch and brake assy)
- Clutch Master and Slave (i think the clutch master setup is a BIT different on the protege. See if you can, get the one off a sephia. It's similar to RX7 setup and is better since its completely independent from the brake system)
- Clutch line
- Flywheel
-Clutch disc, Clutch cover, pressure plate, pilot bearing and release bearing (clutch tool is recommended for installation ease)
- Shifter assembly
- 5 speed speedo (If you want to, you can just use the bottom half of the 5 speed and thread it onto the auto top half.. it will work fine)
- 5 Speed starter
That's all you NEED. You don't even need the 5 speed ECU. All it takes to start and drive the car after the swap is a small jumper wire (or a toggle switch) to fool the ECU into thinking that the auto is in Park or Neutral. Also, I didn't get the 5 speed center console yet... but from the looks of it, i just need to change the top plastic insert to adapt the auto console for 5 speed use.
I finished the swap a couple days ago and already drove it around the area and out to my "test track". Being able to shift when I want feels soooo good. It feels like a completely different car now and I can tell you it's well worth the hassle.
Did you remove the brake master cylinder in order to remove the pedal? It looks like this setup of the clutch on the Sephia is easier than the shared kind. I will try to grab one out of the sephia that I got a harness from. It looks like the most annoying part might be de-constructing the dash. Now you've got me excited. Why didn't I do this to my green car?? Too bad I got rid of it...
the G-series trannies? whats good abt them? are they stronger or something?
Yeh supposedly stronger and also has bigger clutch, etc. I gotta run to school right now but you will find useful comparision data if u do a search on the forum.
um..... my service manual, the gear ratios, my 20/20 vision, the fact that both cars have the same engines and same part numbers for just about everything engine and trans related at any dealer that carries both mazda and kia, the list goes on.....
