You should buy the Haynes manual for your car.

I'm actually about to do my front brake pads soon, but i haven't thoroughly looked at the unit yet. Is it that difficult?
Another thing, does anyone know what a good replacement brand would be for the brake pads? One that could improve stopping distances would be nice cuz currently the car stops horribly.

There is a thin metal clip holding both pins in place it should be to the inside of the calliper facing the pin heads. I've found you don't have to remove the calliper to change the pads, once the clip is removed and the pins are pushed out the brake pads slide right out the calliper through the opening in the top.

            Just like above..

            It's actually pretty simple.

As for replacement pads. I think a lot of people like hawk. Mazdaracer would be a good person to pm about brake pads. He does a lot of autocrossing.

I have some autozone pads on the front.. they are nice only when cold and garbage when they heat up... (on the protege)
