    1990 323 question

I have a 1990 323 1.6L sohc (canada), i have the turbo from a 1989. I would like to use it what would be needed? can I just take the Dohc head off some other car and put it on? Which car could I take the head off of? do I need to do anything after changing the head.

    hey welcome to the board.

Ok you can potentially turbo your existing engine with a: custom exaust mani, you have the turbo, stand alone EMS, upgraded injectors, possible a 5th injector, and a whole bunch else.

if you really wanted to go big, get the engine out of a ford escort GT, you'll need the whole front clip, and swap in a 1.8L DOHC, you'll have more options that way

or you could swap in a CDM GTX it is a 1.6L and you wouldn't have to worry about mounts and tranny

And drove a rod through his block.

no the 2 engines are very different. the 1.6L engine has a smaller block compared to the 1.8L. so 2 different engines. but the EGT engine aka the BP-DE will fit in your car, if you also swap trannies, and mounts, and crossmember, and ecu, and wiring harness, ect...

Nope, the 1.8L is the same design as the 1.6, but longer. However, you could look into the head form a Mercury Capri XR2. The XR2 has the same engine as the 323 GTX. It seems as though the XR2 may be a bit more common.

              isn't the XR2 a 1.8L? I thought it was a bp-zde

To be perfectly honest, here in Ottawa we get the short end of the stick evey now and again. Ok you have a turbo. cool, now you need to worry about everything else. the turbo mates to the exaust manifold, do you have the mani? if you do, that is one more part down. if not you can have a custom one made. Speedstyle can do this for you. The cheapest way to go turbo is to do a WHOLE engine swap. you will have to upgrade everything if you go turbo, might as well drop in a pre-assembled engine. if you want the cheapest way. can't find a turbo engine? do what i am doing

I bought a part car, 91 ford escort GT. i am lifting out the engine, and the ECU. and swapping them into my car. from here i can buy all the needed part for a turbo project, from websites like corksport.com. the 1.6L had little aftermarket as far as i can tell. i mean you can always go custom, but custom = money!

the cheapest way to go is to a full engine swap with a turbo 323. swapping heads, means swapping ECUs, and injectors, your wires wont match, you have to redo all your belts, certian things will no longer line up. a head swap is not as easy as unbolt an rebolt.

IF I get the enginer for a GT does it just pop in?
same ounts? Im assuming I need its transmission and its intake and exhaust manifold. Besides that is there anything else I need from it?

i am currently swapping in an EGT engine. you will need pretty much everything from the engine bay. I got a whoile car for $350, FWIR the mount are not the same but close. PM me and i can meet up and see what youhave and show you what needs to be done.

As far as the turbo mani. is it a 1.6L turbo mani or a 1.8L turbo mani? also you have an SOHC i believe the turbo mani's are for the dohc. the sohc bolt pattern is not the same as the dohc.
