    auto to standard

    Ok, so here's my issue...

i bought a 2001 protege lx2.0 about this time, last year.
at the time, i had barely driven at all, didn't know i'd actually LIKE driving (since all i had driven before was a Grand Voyager).
Needless to say, i'm pretty auto-illiterate.

when i bought my car, i didn't know how to drive standard and i didn't wanna learn on my new car... so i bought auto... now i pretty much have a grip on standard, and i don't like the lack of control in auto...

is it, at all, possible to change my auto tranny to manual??

money isn't too much of an issue... i'm just wondering the work related to it.. my city has some of the world's worst drivers, so the junkyard has ALOT of newer car parts, and i'm sure finding a 3rd gen. manual tranny for a 2l pro wouldn't be too difficult.

i know a few good mechs (cousins, uncles, friends) that would be willing to help assemble it all... but they all tell me it's not worth the cash..

    help?
i LOVE my car.. i have a few mods to it... and i don't wanna trade it in for a 5-speed...

Yeah, it's probably more trouble than it's worth, especially if you're not familiar with cars. You have to replace a LOT more parts than you'd imagine. But hey, if you're really looking for a challenge, more power to you.
Do a Google search and you should find some info, even if it's not specific to Mazda.

It would cost you less in money, blood, sweat, and tears to trade it in for a 5-speed. Just take whatever mods you have out, trade it in (might try and get a new one with financing and rebates like they are now), and get a 5-speed.

Well, I think I'll just stick with my auto, then.

Tinted windows aren't the easiest thing to transfer over, neither is my whole amp kit (not much time in my days)

I'll just feel like a wank with a Turbo and auto-tranny. hahaha.

if youre willing to take the financial hit of making the car less valueable, and you want to do it, go ahead.

and you are not lying it will be a financial hit...

            on another note.
I was going to say that the guys were being a bit on the negative side. but then when I think about it. You still have a car payment. You would also be dishing out about 2,000 to 3,000 dollars in parts alone. You will more than likely get hit with some serious labour also and your waranty that you have on the car will be void.

I have to say when you get into the price range of 2,000+ to mod a car. I see it as you might as well buy a new one and get it over with. You could put that 2,000 down on a 5 speed MSP or something even faster than your pro.. and then trade you car in and if your lucky break even.

I have to agree with the guys. On a car that is a 02 it is just not worth it . For 1 the parts are going to be way to expensive. If it was a 90-97 I would say it is worth it. But otherwise.. ahhh nope..

Keep the car another year and then trade it in..

dude yea, its a bitch to do, wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much work, but if you are inclined, its possible, if you can find a donor car, and you know how to do all the work, then yeah i might think bout it, but dude its a new car, lol

yeah.. i ended up deciding against it..
i'm not really gonna race the car... so i'll just let it sit with the auto and probably stick with a Stage 1 turbo.

would that actually be worth it? Putting a turbo in an auto?

                          yes it would.
                          you'd notice the difference.
and as time goes buy, more and more '01 pros will find themselves in junkyards due to horrid accidents... that's where i woud acquire a tranny, anyways... take their manual in exchange for an auto tranny...
