I hope that's a mistake, or this thing won't be any faster than a 6i.
So what is the current ES' 0-60 in time. The Mazda3 is 8.5 seconds. Also, I can't remember curb weight on the ES either. They talk about aftermarket enthusiasts, but they haven't come out with much with the current Pros and MSPs.

I have seen the current ES anywhere from 8.3 plus. The new car with the 2.0L is probably about as fast, I bet the 2.3L will be pretty fast though (probably close to 8 or a high 7 if we are lucky). I hope Mazda is just overshooting on the curb weight, because that is a couple of hundred pounds heavier than the last gen.
Mazda plans call for a three-door, wagon and convertible 3, and MazdaSpeed, MPS and all-wheel-drive versions available by the end of calendar year 2005.
Convertible should be interesting. I wonder if AWD will make it to the US.
i have a question, kinda off topic...y does mazda make each new protege bigger, heavier, and while more powerful, not as fast...the market obviously craves out of the box power, yet those demands arent met...even the msp, while its handling is out of this world, its not that fast, so it didnt sell as well as some of its competitors-mazda needs to stop being scared and just build the small sedan we want...even if its based on the three-just give it the grunt it needs to make the zoom-zoom moniker proud

Thats what I'm talkin about!!! I'd buy that in a heartbeat, even over a Miata!

it's not even fair to compare the MSP's sales to alot of major imports on the market, it's was first into limited production, and now looks to be in a 2003.5 midswing type of deal? i don't know, i mean to me, Mazda needs to build at least 1 single car that is reasonably priced and will spank your pants off!! and so far, it doesn't look like mazda is incredibly interested in producing something as such. all of what mazda produces is 4 and 6 cylinder vehicles, and the rotaries.. which granted pushes alot of capability for a car maker, but sticking to their values of what seems to be fuel economy with a slice of performance, they just really can't afford a gut buster type of car JUST YET! don't get me wrong, because i think most models they compete with maybe ahead in sales, but comparable in performance. they're projecting a 2.5% market share, which is wonderful to hear mazda moving up, but the one thing that mazda can't compete with is the fact that car makers like toyota have for long had factories here in america.. reducing costs on importing. while mazda has to face the american auto-workers being unionized, having to pay higher wages and benefits for workers, i think economically, they'd make out better producing in the US instead of shipping everything from japan. at anyrate, can someone explain this to me.. and i quote...
"We would have liked greater available front suspension travel, as we bottomed out a few times in both cars in situations where we were not expecting anything of the sort."
WTF is this supposed to mean? tire rub on a production car? is this legal? heh,
peace
EDIT : OKAY, wtf was i thinking, i just saw a few photo's before, now i see the entire picture, I WANT A 5 DOOR mazda3
Mazdausa.com has posted pdf spec and pricing on its website. They list curb weight as:
4-door i 2696 MT and 2738 AT
4-door s 2762 MT and 2807 AT
5-door 2826 MT and 2857 AT
I have the current Protege sedan at 2634 and the P5 at 2716 so this is just a tad heavier. Edmunds tested a Mazda6 with the 2.3l engine at 8.0 0-60. The Mazda3 at 200-300 lbs lighter, I guess would go 7.8 or 7.9? Personally, I think that's not bad at all.
