    Fixed my wheel bearing!!! w00t!!!

    Finally

I've been tracing down this noise for the last couple of weeks, and it's been getting worse.

    1) I first thought it was my p/s axle cause it made the noise only when turning left or going straight... I was wrong.

    $58 down the drain.

    2) Then I thought, maybe it's the intermediate shaft support bearing... nope.

    $60 down the drain

    3) Maybe my nasty looking lower ball-joints have something to do with it?... nope.

$26 down the drain (not really, I did need new ones)

4)Hmmm... maybe my wheel bearing is bad? But the p/s wheel is solid like a rock... no play at all...

    $0 w00t!!!

    5) WTF?!?!?! my d/s wheel has a good bit of play... time for a new wheel bearing!!!

    $40

    6) Oh wait, I don't have a press and my friend at the Mazda stealership is busy... guess i'll have to go to another machine shop

    $40

    7) Almost done!!! oh ****, my outer tie-rod end is busted

    $35

    ALL BACK TOGETHER!!!!!

    no more thumping

    oh yeah, total = $259

I changed both of my front bearings and one rear bearing by myself this summer. Didn't even bother working on the bearing, it's much easier to get a used spindle and replace the whole damn thing. untie the axleshaftt, remove the ball joint and the top bolts that attach to the spring take out the spindle, throw it in the garbage (they charge 60 $can to extract the bearing and to put a new one) and put the new one. 1hr of work.

I was only charged $40 to extract/install the wheel bearing. If my hook-up at the Mazda stealership hadn't been busy it woulda been free

I had my bearing pressed in at Tires Plus for $30 :D

Glad you hunted down the noise! I still have some to hunt down myself - Im 99% sure it's the axles though lol. Im too lazy to remove them and trade them in at auto zone tho haha.

Yeah I have this noise in my 323 ... It's farking annoying.

Like a frigin rubbing sound, coming from the passenger side. I have to figure out if it's the tire rubbing on something, although I can't imagine what, or if it's the damn wheel bearing..
I would be a bit tight if it's the wheel bearing . cause man I am spending enough trying to prep this car for winter damit.

i just replaced both front axles tryin to get rid of that noise... is there NO other way to get the new bearing in besides a hydro press? maybe a block of wood and a hammer? :D

The bearing is 33 bucks from AutoZone... and you need a new oil seal which is like 5 bucks. If you jack your car up and can move the wheel around (rock it back and forth) when grabbing it at the top and bottom... get a new wheel bearing. It's cheaper if you actually find out for sure what the problem is before you start replacing stuff... i'm just kinda retarded and replaced a bunch of stuff that I coulda probably left alone.

BTW... i'm pretty sure you need a press, that bearing is really in there... doubt a board/hammer would do the trick.
