Heads-up: 4-1 BP header from.... Finland! possible group buy

I have been in contact recently with a Finnish exhaust company (Martelius) and have a complete 2" exhaust system (including header, midpipe, and catback) on order for my Pro.....

I'd like to gauge interest in a group buy especially for their 4-1 header (and for other parts if there is an interest)

As many know, only Pacesetter and Genie headers are available for our 1.8 DOHC here in the states - and the Genie is relatively hard to come by at that. Both the Genie and the Pacesetter seem to be 'decently' made, cheaply priced 4-2-1 designs; Pacesetter, though, has redesigned their header as a 2 piece 4-1. After recieving their new 4-1 from Nopi and looking it over; I had zip, nada interest in installing it. See my thread in the 'BG drivetrain' subforum about it. If you can get your hands on their 4-2-1, I personally feel that was their best design.

Anyways, here's the low-down on the 4-1 available from Finland as described to me by the shop owner:

    - Equal-length ~1 5/8 primaries - tuned for max power above 5,000rpm
    - Collector is a cone-type design for increased performance throughout the torque band
    - 2" outlet at the flex-pipe(2" is enough for good na power; if you need something larger, you could always chop the end off, and weld up a custom setup)
    - made of 409 ferritic steel(better than a 'mild steel', but not as good as 304)

    Ok, Price

Regular, normal price is 377 euros ($494) . Shipment to the US via mail (cheapest) is 139.50 euros ($182.83). With the current (terrible) exchange rate, that is a total of $676.83 for just *1* header.

I will know sometime after the first of the week what kind of pricing would be available for the group buy. What I am hoping to be able to do is offer these headers shipped to your door for $494 OR less. That's the goal at least It may or may not be possible....

I realize this is expensive, but look at what you're getting! The only off-the-shelf long-tube 4-1 header that actually appears to be well-designed to make some good power. No other off-the-shelf header like that for us! IMO, this header is along the lines of a DC Sports or Racing Beat (which retail for ~$400-500). The only real compromise to me is the material used: 409. But even then, its still better than the Genie or Pacesetter 'mild-steel' varieties. I will be coating mine....

I will also dyno-test this header on my rebuilt 10:1 motor. In fact, I *hope* to do a back-to-back comparison on the dyno with the full finnish exhaust vs my current Genie 4-2-1/oem midpipe(catco cat)/Pacesetter 2 1/4" catback. If the header is as good as it looks, I'm willing to step out on a looong limb and guess an easy 10+whp for the new exhaust over my current exhaust.

There you go I wanted to go ahead and post this to get the ball rolling. If it works out, I will need all payments up front via Paypal, and hope to have it complete by say the end of February or perhaps later.... Tell me what you think!

hopefully we can get the price down - what I have in mind is a bulk shipment delivered to me; and then shipping them out to whoever has jumped on the buy. here's a few more pics of the header and 2" midpipe available, as well as the header on an edm 1.8 323.

the midpipe would be an option as well; I'll have a better idea on the prices sometime this week...

yeah that engine compartment is in need of a good cleaning but mine needs it as well! maybe with the swap i'll be able to shine it up some....

bty i was also told that due to the increased scavenging, fuel pressure might need to be upped......

Sounds like a good idea, But i doubt you will get more than 2 people that actually get in on this.

yes Jon i realize that the response might be rather small; but then again, maybe not....

the worst thing about it (that makes it somewhat 'expensive') is the weak dollar compared to the euro and the shipping from europe.

if i can get it in the sub $500 range shipped, i think that would be comparable to the typical going price for any US made true performance header available for most other cars here. of course, the honda crowd due to its enormous size, gets good stuff for cheaper....

As soon as I sell my 240, I will DEFINITELY be interested.

I believe we do get a break because of the VAT, since we're not in the European Union... but I'm not sure of the details. May want to look up the specifics...

unfortunately, although I think that's a very nice piece, I believe I've made the decision to not swap in a BP, and rather save up for a K series swap for my 323.

you're right Jesse, but....... the 377 euros 'normal price' I listed for the header includes that break with 22% finnish vat the header lists for 460 euros. if only the exchange rate was more in the 1:1 range - or better for the dollar!! currently, 1 euro = 1.31 dollars

i'm sure you'll have fun with the K-series, but I would have liked to see you do a 200whp BP

                          FYI:

If necessary, anyone interested can contact me directly at bp-bility@att.net

I hope to have prices within the next few days for say a group buy of 2-4, 5-9, and a 10+
Again, I hope to be able to offer a sub-$500 shipped with the right number of people.....
I want to give this some decent time if it works out so that whoever's interested can save up for it. At the same time I realize that a few of you may want it *sooner* than later....... We'll just have to see how it works out.
Its also somewhat of a complicated thing because of the exchange rates - who knows how they will change over the next month or two. I know which way I would like for them to go.....

I hope to have the exhaust i've ordered for my Pro by the 2nd week of february. I'm thinking what I will do is put the 4-1 header and 2" midpipe(w/cat) on my current (original) modified motor (teamed up with the Pacesetter catback) and dyno it ASAP. This will give me a chance to be sure of fitment and also get an idea on the gains since I have so many dyno charts to compare it to...... When I drop in the rebuilt 10:1 motor, I'll dyno the same exhaust, and then change out just the Pacesetter 2 1/4" catback with the new 2" catback while at the dyno. That'll give a back to back comparison of 2 1/4" vs 2"

By doing it this way, I should have some solid numbers to give you regarding gains before the group buy ends. That makes me a little nervous......... Hopefully my somewhat 'worn-out' motor is *able* to make power at the higher rpms where it seems this header will shine

Well, this is the *plan*..... keep in mind things might change and might not work out so readily/easily.

Let me know when you order your header. Because I can pay pal you the money to order mine also.I hate waiting. I'm willing to take a chance and get one an hope it makes more power than my pacesetter 4-2-1 header now. Ofcourse I will going to back to the dyno to verify any gains attributed to the header with proper tuning.

                              an update:
the package was shipped from Finland this past Thursday and should be here by the 24th. srad2drag is getting a header as well; so between the two of us there should be plenty of dyno fun i still hope to dyno it on my current motor, and then of course the rebuilt motor will eventually be dynoed. srad2drag is dynoing @ 142whp already so it'll be interesting to see what gains he gets from it.

as far as a group buy, its still a possibility if there is enough interest.... if we could get 5, the cost would likely be a max of $550 shipped to your door. *maybe* cheaper...
the exchange rate, shipping from europe, shipping to you, and paypal fees all ADD up quick!! but it definitely *would be* cheaper than ordering it individually.
anyways, will try to have some dyno results by the 1st or 2nd week of march
