Pondering a swap ( I've used the search button)

    The situation:
Well my sisters boyfriend borowed my battery and when he went to put it back in he connected the gel battery terminals in the opposite posts. Now the car won't even attempt to start but at least my lights still turn on (atleast the battery is still good ).

p.s. I know this isn't going to be cheap

    The question:
The motor is a z5 (95 dx ) and it has 168,546 miles on it (original motor & transmission). I'm figuring the motor will probably go before 200K and if I have to change the computer I might as well do the swap now. The question is what other engine will fit directly into the BHA chassis. I was reading previous post s and I used the search button so I know the BP (I'm aware i'll need the harness as well) is a straight foward swap.

I 'm interested in knowing if an escort GT engine and transmission could be mounted with similar ease as the BP? or a 1st gen protege 1.8? ( I'm aware these swaps are usually done with 1st gens)

Are there any other motors that I haven't read about?

            Thnx for the replies.

TheMan: Would that include sensors like the egr and o2 (being fried)?

Intruder: only the gs model, right? (that's what bruce did)

problem with using a first gen bp is that it'll be OBD-I, second gen ES's came w/ BP, not LX, and they're all OBD-II

Only the GS model. Bruce has a Mazda BP. OCD-SPEED used a KIA BP. And so will pigeon (Chris).

I've never really looked into it because I have a 1st gen but shouldnt the 95-96 Escort GT motors work as they too are OBDII.

buy a ticket for the GTX engine raffle... might win a BPT
if you're willing to do some wiring, that will also fit... and it does bolt up properly

if you're going with a regular BP, try to stick with a 95-96 BP... it'll be an easier swap
and also, so you know... even tho the 95-98 proteges are all 2nd gens, and all look similar... the 95-96 and 97-98 have different wiring, ecus, and a few different sensors

just keep that in mind when you're buying parts and doing the swap... cause you'll end up frying another ecu

oh, and get an FSM and wiring diagrams
dont even try to do the swap without it unless you're a pro

and if your car is currently a 5 speed, then you could re-use your transmission

Was 97 the year they switched to solid lifters? I know the 95-6 Protege BP's had HLA's, but there was some discussion about a change across the board in all mazda motors to solid lifters in 199x.

The ECU wasn't fried, it was just the main fuse and some power wiring.

                              Blue ledz was right.

So the z5 lives a little while longer. I'm still looking into the swap. So from what I understand it will probably be cheaper and easier sticking with a kia BP
