    Reccomendations on rim/tire choice.

OK I figured since this section was dead, I would post up a question I had.

background: Got an MX-3, gonna put the GTX into it. I know boosted I will need some 7in wide rims and some decent rubber.

I have been looking at different rims, and I want to keep the rims light like the miata ones, but I want them to be 7in wide.

I have been looking at the konig Heliums on 323Foreward's car... and they are soo hot. Are those 7in wide? I know the heliums are light, so this seems like my prime candidate. Sorry to jack the pic 323Foreward......

    Suggestions? Comments?

I think konig heliums are 6.5 with a pretty boring offset... They are just clones of some mugen wheels... Now, I know you can't afford the mugen wheels (or would even have a desire to have them) but there is another, better copy out there. Check out the Rota circuit 8... they are reasonably priced and weigh less than the konigs.

    15" = $420 shipped on ebay.

My friend suggested Circuit 8's..... Not too bad.

Thats another thing I forgot to mention, I really dont want a larger than 15in rim.

      good suggestion.

        Superleggera's are 15x7 and according to tire rack 11.5lbs each, only catch is that they're 200 a piece . . . .

        Yeah, Heliums are 6.5" wide.

as far as tires, if you just want summers Bridgestone S03's and BFG KDW2's are good choices, a lot of people like Falken Azenis, but IIRC they hydroplane fairly easily. If you want all seasons, Pirelli PZero Nero M+S are pretty good too, for less money the Falken ZE-512's aren't a bad choice either.

Basically it all comes down to how much money you want to spend. If you wanted to spend a little bit more on wheels, and less on tires, the 512's wouldn't be a bad compromise as far as tires go.

200 is a bit much per wheel, but that doesnt mean I cant look for them used... Who knows, I may break down and pickup a set. Those are nice too.....

Hydroplaning is sort of a concern so the Azenis are out... I have potenzas that I like alot.... any opinions on those?

what kind of potenza's? re92's are rocks, re070's on the other hand (OE on STi's) kick ass. S03's are also labeled potenza IIRC they're "Potenza S-03 Pole Position"

all the newer miata rims are 6.5 inches.

                The older ones were smaller.

95proLelia - gonna have to look, they came on the Miata rims I got, and I have been please with them. I dont think they are Pole positions, or any other high end performance tire, but they do say potenza on them.

Hydroplaning is an issue with ANY tire. Azenis aren't nearly as bad as the idiots make them out to be.

What do you want out of a tire?

Very true... I've never had a problem with hydroplaning with Azeni tires... well, after they go bald, yeah, but thats an issue with all tires.

/falken azenis just wear rapidly for a "street tire"

next on my list of "tires to try" is the Advan A032R... cheap when you are buying 14 inch tires.

I want decent tread rating that wont wear out as fast as say an azenis (I will be doing a considerable amount of highway driving; ~70 miles per day)

When I get into autoXing I will probably look at getting a set of track tires to run on.

Mostly it will be higher speed driving (highway/freeway) and "spirited" sprints around town for errands after class and work.

I dont want to spend a load on tires, but I know the importance they play in a good car setup, so no cheaping out here.

Really doesnt matter here, as we have maybe a week of snow... Ice sometimes is an issue on years that its bad, but for the most part the rest of the year is either rain or shine.

Since were about to go into summer anyways and winter is so far off.

also look at the azenis rt...

If you are doing wheels for looks, then we are a bad advisor here. If you just wont 15x7 that won't hurt your wallet, go onto honda boards and start looking for deals. sometimes you can get away with wheels and good condition tires for the price of just the wheels. If you want to buy new though, i'd go with kosei k1s, available from tirerack. Abit pricey, but if you get the tires from there as well, they'll mount and balance for free. As for the sizes, i'd go with something like 15x7.5 or 16x7.5 with +10 offset and pull fenders (iff necessary... ont think it would be... at least on the egt). I actually think 16 is better for the car then 15s, its personal choice.

as for tires, the one on my list to try next are BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW-2

And i'll let a little secret out... early generation celicas (around early 90s) came with 15x6.5. Half an inch smaller then what you are looking for, but these can be picked up for like $30/wheel at a junkyard if you look hard enough. The celica hub also had identical diameter to the escort hub so if you mount them they'll also be hubcentric. I've never tried though, so this is my guess, but that's what my research showed

PS. A032R are competition tires. Not something you'd really want to drive on the street.

PSS. I heard a bunch of horror stories about rotas.
