    Escort GTX vs Viper

I don't like posting into this section of the forum as I don't condone street racing - too many kids die - but this is an unusual one and I want to share. Story is like this.

Today, I was going to pick up a DVD from the local video store with my brother. I was on a 2 laned road turning onto another 2 laned road (both big wide roads) through a long sweeping single lane turn with a yield at the end of it. Half way through the turn I check my rearview and there's this black with white stripes RT10 (the hardtop is the RT10 right?) Viper, right on my tail. He can't pass me through the turn as it is single lane and I shoulder check at the yield sign and no traffic - this makes the street I am turning onto an empty stretch until a street light further up ahead. Seeing how this guy is on my tail, as I make it onto the two laned road, I lean on it (not floored - but close) and I gain on this Viper. I guess that is all he needed. All I hear is a roar (those things are loud at WOT), he downshifts and pulls up on the lane next to me. I lean further into it and shift out of first ... but by this time, the viper is making good progress. Slowed down at 6k in 2nd (about 90 km/h) and so did he, but this time he was 2 cars in front of me. Hehe, I guess the GTX is no match for a Viper - but I think he was impressed by what the little Escort did and decided to give me a show

Those races you know you're going to lose are fun just to make them show you their stuff.

haha, yeah, and besides in was the first time I heard a Viper at WOT. When he was beside me, I couldn't hear my car at all. In order to keep up with a Viper, I think I'd need at least 250-275 whp.

Vipers sound so terrible, they sound like ups trucks under load.

Now the viper truck is one mean mofo. You ever hear them rev its the scariest thing in the world. Its like a yell.

its the same motor, how does it sound different? That doesnt make sense... its like saying a stock EGT sounds different than a stock protege LX.

You need more than 275 whp to keep up with a viper btw... look up cheesefrog... his civic kept up with a viper and he had way more than 275 @ the front wheels.

Lex - congrats on teh runs dood, I am sure your heart was pounding the whole time.

The weight bias between a truck and a viper is way different. The bed is designed to carry a payload. Unladen, the truck has a front weight bias.

very true... I wonder what the weight distribution of the truck versus the car is.

Heh, I could have given him an even better run - later that night I noticed that one of my sparkplug wires had come out of the socket (I had this problem before on my NA setup)

Once the wire was replaced, the car pulls even stronger. Either way, that wouldn't have changed the outcome.

I was assuming 275 whp since the Viper has ~450 hp crank and is probably quite heavy. But then there's the torque ...

on the hwy it would be nuts to keep up with one of those things - the displacement of that motor makes it a daemon at high speeds. My run with him was pretty short because we got to the stoplight on that road pretty quick - I would have completely lost him if he had more open road.

I just can't get the sound of it out of my head, it was just awesome.
