Only 6 cars in the race? Fourteen Michelin-supplied teams withdrew before the race started?? Why?

        ****ty tires.
The tires were self destructing in practice and probably qualifying too. IIRC some of them weren't even able to last more than a couple laps.
Jesus, all Minardi has to do is finish the race and they'll get some points.
Though, I don't see why any other teams didn't do one more lap, even a slow lap and then drop out after everyone else to get the 7-8 spot and finish in the points................

it had to do with the banking in turn 13 (iirc oval turn 4), they were pulling very high vertical g's which is uncommon in F1 and the joint between the belt and sidewall was failing.

Thanks for the info guys. Is it known yet why the Bridgestones were okay on that turn while the Michelins were disintegrating? Also, I believe that I'd heard on Speed Channel that there had been a proposal to temporarily convert that turn to a chicane, before the race, to slow the cars sufficiently to prevent tire damage, but obviously nothing came of it. I guess eventually we'll get the full story but this is quite a blow to Formula 1 racing and a real disservice to its fans.

turn on speed right now if you can, wind tunnel is on. the thing about the chicaine is bs because it would've penalized the bridgestone teams unfairly. it was not an FIA decision, it was the michelin teams that made the decision. there is also some speculation that because firestone ran the indy cars there before, they gave bridgestone the heads up. the chicaine would've been against regulations anyways.
