    brake scuffing/swishing sound

    2001 ES GT.

Any of you experienced a scuffing/swishing sound when the brakes aren't applied? The front pads are newer but the back are fairly broken in, and the sound seems to be coming from the back. It started squealing a couple times for about 20 min at a time, which was odd, so I just had a brake inspection. Shop says brakes are fine, but they couldn't say why it was intermittently squealing.

Yeah I had that "Problem" too for a while; it does eventually go away though (usually). But beware when it goes away you have limited pad left!!!!! What it is is a safety tab they install on the pads themselves that will scrape the rotor when it rotates making a scraping/swishing sound you described. What it indicates is that it will soon be time to replace your pads and or rotors. Some people just pull those tabs off with pliers as they start to rub with a considerable amount of good pad left. I got around 2000 miles on after it started rubbing and my noise stopped after 1000.

I just got some brembo blank rotors (not drilled or slotted) and some new performance pads today...the name is escaping me right now, installing them this weekend. Pics to follow!

I know TheMan pointed you in the right direction, but here's a little more help.

The Technical Service Buliten (TSB) section of the sweet FAQ: http://web2.airmail.net/theman/protegefaq/tsb/

(25-30 down) title is: MT000003995 - REAR BRAKE NOISE / DRAG, PADS SEIZED IN CALIPER

but you could also check to see how worn they are - might just be time to replace them.

I also remembered what pads I got to compliment my Brembo blanks...Akebono PRO ACT pads :-) can't wait to install them!
