    Cleaning factory alloys

Dumb question here: can I use brake system cleaner on my 94 LX wheels or will it damage the finish? Sorry, but I've always had wheel covers before so I don't know.

    Yes and no.

Yes, you can use brake cleaner to completely clean your wheels. I had to use it on my Miata wheels because they had tar splatter on them and it took it right off.

It does however remove the wax coating of the wheels, but simply waxing the wheels afterwards fixes that.

Oh, thanks. Can I find this wheel wax at an auto parts store or wheel shop, or is it more specialized than that?

I used regular body wax, worked fine. They do make "wheel" wax but you'll be fine with just regular paint wax.

Well, if you use a harsh cleaner on wheels you'll notice that they turn dull. Waxing them makes them look normal again. Depends on the wheels though, naturally.

simple green. Spray it on when the wheels are cold and out of direct sunlight. Let it set while you eat breakfast, go out and spray more simple green on, scrubb w/brush. rinse...

Brake cleaner eats paint so be careful.
