    Mazdaspeed Miata!!

    Limited-Edition Roadster Coming Stateside
    By Jennifer Shatwell

    TOKYO, Japan, October 22, 2003
(FCN) -- Mazda is putting another
new twist on its famous open-top,
two-seat roadster -- and giving it
    some extra zoom.

Unveiled this year at the Tokyo
    Motor Show, a limited-edition
    performance model of the
    best-selling MX-5 Miata is coming
in 2004. To be known in Japan as
the Roadster Turbo and to be
introduced in the United States later this year as Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata, this
production concept is designed for the Miata enthusiast who demands even more
    power.

A turbocharged 1.8-liter DOHC engine lies within and rallies more horses with
increased low-end torque for even better acceleration than before. With tinted glass
headlamps on either end of an extra-large air intake, a unique front under-spoiler,
recessed projector fog lamps and special five-spoke aluminum alloy wheels,
there's no doubt this Roadster Turbo is a performance machine. It even sounds
sporty with a carefully tuned exhaust muffler for just enough "vroom-vroom."

As if the wind in your hair and
    blue skies above weren't
enough reason to leave the top
    down, the show vehicle's interior
    features two-tone seats _ red
and black _ that you'll want
    everyone to see. Matching red
trim lines the doors, and red
    stitching accents the shift knob
and the parking brake lever. For
    the complete look, pedals and
    footrests are aluminum alloy, and
the dash and shift panels are
    finished in metallic paint.

    Mazda continues to explore new
possibilities for its two-seat sports car genre. The Roadster Turbo model builds on
the Miata's front engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, which already is famed for its
sporty and nimble ride qualities. Scheduled for delivery in North America, Japan
and Australia only, production of this limited-edition roadster begins in early 2004.

It's about time the USDM gets a 'better' version of a car from mazda

                  Are you implying larger-diameter plumbing?

They need to show a pic of the FMIC, dear god let there be a FMIC!

if it's gonna be around 28k, it's gonna be a tough call between a MS Miata and a base RX-8

                        drop-top 2 seater or rotary 4 seater???? man that's a tough decision!!!

I'd personally go with the miata over the 8, I've heard some complaints about oil leaks/consumption, bad gas mileage, etc. I'm still not sold on reliablity on those rotories. But ****, the BP is a WELL PROVEN engine, my protege has friggin' 160k on it still going strong.

                              Automotive News / November 05, 2003

LAS VEGAS -- MazdaSpeed, the factory aftermarket arm of Mazda North American Operations, will introduce a more powerful version of the Miata next spring.
The roadster will answer Miata owners' pleas for more power with an IHI turbocharger delivering up to 7.25 pounds of boost, combined with a Denso intercooler. The combination will give the 1.8-liter engine 178 hp and 166 pounds-feet of torque, vs. 142 hp and 125 pounds-feet of torque on a production Miata.
The car will have a six-speed manual transmission and a Bosch limited-slip differential.
The MazdaSpeed Miata's chassis will be dropped about a quarter of an inch with shorter, tighter springs. Bilstein dampers, larger front and rear stabilizer bars and a front strut tower brace round out the suspension changes.
Racing Hart wheels are teamed with Toyo 17-inch tires.
Prices haven't been determined, but likely will be "in the mid-20s," said Jack Stavana, Mazda director of accessory operations, at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show. The 2004 Miata starts at $22,388, including destination charge.
One difference between the MazdaSpeed Miata and the Protege that preceded it: All manufacturing and assembly will take place in Japan instead of at dealerships.
The introduction of the MazdaSpeed Miata could also put some zip in Miata sales.
The car hit its U.S. sales peak of 35,944 in 1990, its first full year of sales. Last year's total of 14,392 was the lowest ever.
