    sounds like a blast!!

I'll be hitting a few ice-autocrosses this winter, but I haven't decided what car to drive yet. (either my '85 volvo 744tic or my 92 Escort GT, if I get the trans fixed). I haven't got studded tires yet, but I'd like to. maybe even take the (long) time to make my own with drywall screws... Works pretty good, talking to a couple buddies who've done it.

you want to ice race......then you need to build some tires

Thread discusses the bolt and washer method as well as the dry wall screw method.

The set I have for my first gen escort are not quite that nice.... but they work, cept the car has enugh clutch slipping problems right now without MORE traction from inch long studs.

I will just be running a set of stock studded tires for the protege. Not sure what they even are. I got them off a neighbor for $20, as he moved from a state you could use them in, but you can't here in MI. As for mounting... I take night classes at the college and I can mount whatever tires I want.

        BTW nice link..... good info.

hmmm, now I really want to make myself a set of big-sharp-pointy-teeth tires. Except the ones I have I'm about 98% sure that I'll be changing some bodywork with them.

Question, I've got at least 4 of the "space-saver" spare tires. Do you guys think bolting those would do any good on ice? They're pretty tiny diameter-wise, but with all 4 the same way, it will just keep the engine in the useable-torque range instead of lugging, I think...

It would be cheaper than full-size tires, and kinda funny too.

I have never ice raced before. I picked up an ice racing car a year ago with the spiked tires. I did a lot of things to it, put on some slicks and ran it for a few autocrosses here in the Detroit regin. I am still having problems with the clutch since it is a Taurus 3.0 Vulcan motor mated to the stock 1986 5 speed trans. I have a sweet 6 puck metalic disk... I got a clutch pack kit from RAM CLUTCHES *(NOT HAPPY WITH THEM)* this summer. It had the sweet disk..... but a STOCK pressure plate and throw out bearing.... I could have saved $100 buying a stock kit, pitching the disk, and just buying their disk. THEY MISLEAD ME SAYING THAT THE KIT WOULD BE GOOD FOR MORE POWER THAN I HAD. Well they were wrong. The clutch slips from 2nd on, and 1st does not slip cus the tires give up first. That lead to the scort not breaking 17 sec in the 1/4 mile this summer at the Morana V6 Ford Challengel I will be getting a resprung pressure plate from Clutch Masters next summer, they said they could give me 40-50% more clamping force.

I got a deal on the street studed tires from my neighbor, and will run them on the Protege

From what I have read is that the tires should work, but their stock steel wheels may not hold up to the side loads placed on them from the added traction.

I have a used tire shop around here that sells crap tires from $5 to whatever each. That might be a cheaper option.

Actually, I've got a set of 195/60-14 bald Azenis that I will be using, and I'm going to be doing the drywall-screw-from-inside bit to them. I'm using them because the Azenis has a very stiff and thick carcass, so it shouldn't lose screws like thinner tires can. Dunno yet if I'll actually use drywall screws, or something a little thicker and less brittle....
