    323 GTR in a '90 AWD Protege

Marc wanted to see some pix so here goes. It *can* be done. Now get yer car on the road, man...The GTX is a BPT engine/gearbox swapped open class rallycar. The small turbo has way better throttle response than the VJ 23, good for rally. It's plenty fast for me. I managed 2nd overall in my last sprint and 4th overall last rally. I'll try to keep it outta the trees next event. The Protege is gonna hafta get dynoed and final tuned. I'm pretty sure there's better wastegate control to be had.

'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and
'90 AWD Protege, yet another GTR swap, Open class rallycar with a Toyota GT4 gearbox swap, thus crossing the line between hobby and mental illness. And a Brabus E55 K8, removing all doubt.

Here's how it fits under the hood. Easier install than doing the same swap in the GTX.

Turbo/ intercooler shot. It's kinda buried, but so far, the intake temps only go up a few degrees at full boost. We'll see how well it works in summertime temps later..

How long do you suppose the AWD transmission is going to last?

have you installed the gtr tranny as well?
                sweet install...
                stealthiest pro of all...
                Also where is the vaf?
How do you drive the coil packs? (from an mx-5 right?)
Sth tells me there is a standalone behind all these (lack of vaf, so maybe there is map + coil packs)

                edit :
plus the absence of the lambda sensor in the stock location...
What are you hiding man... ?

                edit reloaded..

oh god i just saw your post on the other thread...
                so I was right..
                unbelievable swap....

Oh wow, didn't think to look at the number of wheel studs.

                      Sweet.

how long it that gearbox gonna last... Ah but that is the question. The one in the gtx has a couple rallies and a lotta street miles on it and so far so good. No clutchdump starts for me...Yeah, full GTR suspension and brakes as well.

I thought you had the USDM AWD gearbox, not the GTX/GTR stuff. So which one do you have?

The gearbox is a BPT JDM unit, with the viscous centerdiff. Unfortunately not the GTR one with the shotpeened gears. But this one is one hell of a lot easier to find.

GTR PRotege goes to the dyno shop

So FINALLY I was able to get a decent dyno result. Had to go through hell getting the Link to talk to their computer. Although the car is tuned well enough to go down the road, the charts show a few issues. The biggest is the AF ratio. It's fine till about 5.5 grand then it drops like a stone to about 9.5 to 1. And that's right where torque starts to drop off, follwoed shortly by HP. It's looking like once we get that fixed, there's another 30-40 ponies waiting to get loose. Fixing AF from 8 to 1 up to 9.5 got us an additional 20 hp. I'll finish tuning the car using a borrowed laptop and datalog lab. I think I've figured out the parameters I need to mess with to get the dyno chart generated by road runs with DLL to match up to the dyno run. So right now it looks like we're making about 240 HP and 250 ft/lb at the wheels. This is a VERY fun family 4door sleeper from hell. So, a Q for you, this thing is currently running a 2.5" exhaust, do you think replacing it with a 3" would be a good idea or a waste of time? --Jay
