    steering rack mod

I am in the process of doing a steering rack mod for my escort since I have an extra rack. If all goes well then will do it on my pro ass well. I am gonna convert the racks from power steering to manual. I will let you know how everything goes. If all goes well I wanna do the pro within the next 30 days.
Once this rack I am working on is complete and installed, I will take it for an alignment and if all goes as well as I beleive it will. Should be working on the next rack for the pro in about 2 weeks.

Well the rack is completely torn down, and installed plugs in 4 of the 6 fitting holes. I also cut the piston off the main steering shaft. The rack really is ready to be put back together but I want to tap out the last 2 hold first that I had plugged along time ago with jb well and install allen plugs in those as well. If all goes as planned I should have the rack painted and back together by the end of the weekend.
So far with the way this rack is going, once I have the rack out of my pro I should be able to complete it withing 2 hours or less. I can't wait to remove the power steering on the pro. I ran it with the belt off some time ago and there was a pretty big difference. Also the A/c doesn't work and since we are moving back to NY by this summer the a/c is gonna come out at the same time as the power steering. This should be a pretty good weight reduction. Plus if it reacts the same as the escorts I have done this to, the car should act more balanced with the weight gone.

I always wondered if it would be worth actually removing those things. Not that I would, since manual steering kinda sucks in traffic (when I drive in Boston, I'd get p0wned) and i like staying cool in the summer when it breaks the 100 F mark. I guess it would be even better if you actually removed the parts rather than just the belt

Just taking the belt off made a really good difference. But is alot harder to steering than removing the system and having a true manual rack. Unless you have a real heavy vehicle or really wide tires, manual steering is not that bad.
