So, my techs are telling me that if you don't remove an ECU properly, something about grounding the circuit, then the ECU will be worthless. Do you guys know anything about this?

Well, the general rule is to disconnect the ground first and attach it last in an electronic circuit. I have removed many ECUs and have yet to make one worthless. Basically I remove the plugs first including the relay attached to the ECU and then remove the ECU from it's supporting screws
You just don't want to short something out or overload a circuit. If you open it up you also dont want to discharge static electricity through any of the chips inside
