Gina had been complaining that the brakes were acting up on the pro so I pulled it in the garage the day before yesterday. I new there was alot of rust since the car came from NY a year ago and just planned on pulling everything apart and putting new guide pins in for the pads and lubricating the slides since I could see there was plenty of pad left.
Once I pulled the clips for the guide pins, I found the pins would not come out. I then reached for a center punch and my hammer to try and tap them out from the back side, they still wouldn't budge. Reach for something bigger, my air hammer with a center punch. Still no budge, the only think it was doing was damaging the pin. The guide pins were completely rusted solid.
Next I reach for my air cut off and cut the pins in half, cut the head of the pin with a chisel on the air hammer and use the center punch with the air hammer to knock the pins out in 4 peices from both sides. Fortunately I already had new pins left from my escort with uses the same hardware kit. But before installing these I decided to inspect further.
I pull the caliper off, then the rotors. The inside of the rotors are complete rust pitted on the friction surface with over 1/32" deep rust pits, there were only 2 1/4" strips on the inside of the rotor where the brake pad was actually gripping. I was like what the hell. I have never seen this. So I called the store I work at and had them put some good pads and rotors on hold for me to pick up later.
I got to looking at the calipers and pulled the slided, the dust boots were dry rotted and the slides were rust pitted as well. DAM... I called back again. I knew we could order semi loaded calipers that are powder coated, so I had them order a set of yellow powder coateds for $100 plus tax with xchange. For the time being just put the old rotors, pads, and new pins that I had in to get by for a day.
That night I went and picked up the new rotors, pads, brake cleaner, and caliper grease and spent about $59 after my discount, then my calipers came in yesterday with came out to $154 with a $45 core which I will get back today.
As of this morning the front brakes are back together. The brakes look and work sooooo much better. I wish I had the money to get some after market rotors but the money we just spent on what I got was too much for us, so I will have to upgrade later.
I will post some pics up later after I get a chance to upload the pics on my web site. Unfortunately I didn't want to get my camera dirty so I don't have a pic of the terrible guide pins that I had to cut out but I have pics of everything else.
