    New front brakes

Gina had been complaining that the brakes were acting up on the pro so I pulled it in the garage the day before yesterday. I new there was alot of rust since the car came from NY a year ago and just planned on pulling everything apart and putting new guide pins in for the pads and lubricating the slides since I could see there was plenty of pad left.

Once I pulled the clips for the guide pins, I found the pins would not come out. I then reached for a center punch and my hammer to try and tap them out from the back side, they still wouldn't budge. Reach for something bigger, my air hammer with a center punch. Still no budge, the only think it was doing was damaging the pin. The guide pins were completely rusted solid.
Next I reach for my air cut off and cut the pins in half, cut the head of the pin with a chisel on the air hammer and use the center punch with the air hammer to knock the pins out in 4 peices from both sides. Fortunately I already had new pins left from my escort with uses the same hardware kit. But before installing these I decided to inspect further.
I pull the caliper off, then the rotors. The inside of the rotors are complete rust pitted on the friction surface with over 1/32" deep rust pits, there were only 2 1/4" strips on the inside of the rotor where the brake pad was actually gripping. I was like what the hell. I have never seen this. So I called the store I work at and had them put some good pads and rotors on hold for me to pick up later.
I got to looking at the calipers and pulled the slided, the dust boots were dry rotted and the slides were rust pitted as well. DAM... I called back again. I knew we could order semi loaded calipers that are powder coated, so I had them order a set of yellow powder coateds for $100 plus tax with xchange. For the time being just put the old rotors, pads, and new pins that I had in to get by for a day.
That night I went and picked up the new rotors, pads, brake cleaner, and caliper grease and spent about $59 after my discount, then my calipers came in yesterday with came out to $154 with a $45 core which I will get back today.
As of this morning the front brakes are back together. The brakes look and work sooooo much better. I wish I had the money to get some after market rotors but the money we just spent on what I got was too much for us, so I will have to upgrade later.
I will post some pics up later after I get a chance to upload the pics on my web site. Unfortunately I didn't want to get my camera dirty so I don't have a pic of the terrible guide pins that I had to cut out but I have pics of everything else.

Yeah, those guide pins are a bitch, and from what I heard, a very common issue on Proteges/Escorts. I can only imagine the vibrations your brakes had to make with pins rusted solid. I had to go through the same thing, on the air tools got the job done. I got the guides out, clean the rust off, greased the lights out of them, replaced rubber boots and basically the new front brakes kit, and it was smooth sailing from there.

I wouldn't be so upset about not getting aftermarket rotors. They are more for looks than performance. Aftermarket pads would have been a different story.

Guess I was lucky, I had no problems when I did my brakes. Even the pads looked amazing. The first owner of my car must've treated her real nice. I do too, just with a little more zoom.
Seems like every day you're able to do something new on the pro (even being regular matainence)

I try to, just hard to do with a lack of money, just have to be really creative.

Same exact issue on mine. On a whim at the JY today I pulled some extra caliper hardware. Noticed that about 50% of the guides were seized. Got home tonight to inspect my calipers and BINGO...the guides are completely seized inside the bores where they pass through the calipers. The rubber is dry rotted and the guides are rusted to the point where I cannot budge them. Looks like some new calipers are in the very immediate future.

wow talking about waking and old thread...lol, i have actually redone my brakes again just a few months ago. Pins were siezed again but this time because the rust some how got under the powerder coat and pinched teh pinches, chipped out the powder coat this time, greased heavily and now work amazing.

I'm pretty good about keeping the caliper pins on my truck smooth...I think the problem with the caliper design here is the shorter bolt/guide is protected completely by a rubber boot while the longer one actually comes in contact with the caliper since the boots fit only on the ends. The smaller ones move with great effort on my Pro while the longer ones are totally wasted. I noticed this while at the JY yesterday.

But the shorter bolt is immovable in much more cases than the longer one, despite the rubber protection. The lower pin-guide is oxidized and rubber begin increase her size, thats why guide movements become blocked by rust in rubber boot ((.

yeah so both sides of the rubber need to be greased to prevent the rust, that is my method to my madness now, and regreased every 6-9 months, helps with performance anyway.

Did that and got my calipers installed today and brakes bled. What a difference...even the pistons on the old calipers were rusty and seized up. I would have liked to have replaced the rubber hoses going to the calipers but the 10mm flare nuts are corroded and I hated to try to get them off for fear of breaking the line.

Anyways a hell of a difference and now it brakes like it should.
