Is the amp turning on? if not check your power connections, fuse, remote wire, and ground. If it is, make sure the speakers are wired correctly

Check your ground. I bet there isn't a reall good connection. I recommend using on of the backseat seatbelt bolts. Pull the bolt sand off the contact area and install the ground cable. Should make a big difference.

I'm going to guess that the salesman at the audio shop told you that. A cap might help with dimming lights but it will NOT make the bass hit harder... my guess would be that something was wired wrong and the shop took the opportunity to sell you something and fix it at the same time.

There's only a certain amount of power available in every system (I'm talking about the electric system of the car, not the output of the amps). The more pieces you add to a system, the more power is used. When you add a cap between the battery and the amps, you take a little of that power away from the system. The advantage is that the cap acts as a buffer between the amp and the battery, and so when the amp draws power suddenly, it draws from the cap directly, and the power from the battery remains relatively steady so your lights don't dim (or at least not as much). But you still have LESS overall power than you did before you added the cap.
