    strut mount replacement

    Hi all,
I am new to this site and this is my first post and I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT CAR REPAIRS!!!!
I was told yesterday that I need to change both front strut mounts on my 1.5L, 96' Protege LX. I want to know if there are any other parts to be bought in addition to the mounts to complete the job?
ALso the mechanic told me alignment of the wheels will be required after replacement, is this true?

Please advise, ur help is highly appreciated.

    Thanks

I don't think there are any other parts you will have to replace when changing the front strut mounts. You may need to replace some nuts and bolts if they are too rusty or damaged however.

It is a good idea to get an alignment done whenever the suspension is removed from the car and/or parts are replaced. If you absolutely can't afford it now, just keep an eye on your tires as they may wear from the car being out of alignment a little. I would get it done as soon as possible.

Will you be attempting the install yourself?

you will need to get a spring copressor to help you get the mounts on and off of your strut/spring assembly you should be able to rent one or get one through a loan a tool program at a place like Canadian Tire

Thanks for ur reply, that was help.

But now a problem has arisen. The mech now says that the strut mounts are right, but the struts are bad and need to replace front right side one.

So probably I should tell u guys the problem in the car: Whenever I pass over an irregular road there is a kind of a "thump" from the front Rt side. Sounds like something is broken inside and the sound has been getting louder. So what do u think, is it the mounts or the struts themselves.

On manually pressing the front end of the car, spring action does seem to be exagerated (on the said side) but apperes normal on the other side. The mounts have cracks in them, could that be the reason?????

          SO I am totally confused,
          Please help!!!

Struts don't typically make noises when they wear out, so the "thump" sound you describe is most likely from a bad mount. (Although, it could still be a bad strut.)

However, bad mounts don't typically allow for "exaggerated" suspension movement. Bad struts do. How far (and how many times) does that corner of the car oscillate when pushing on it manually?

I'm personally quite surprised that one side of the car is so dramatically different than the other. Regardless of this however, make sure to replace struts in pairs (front two or back two), if not all four at once. Otherwise, the car will handle just as poorly as it does now.

If there is any difference from one side to another, then there is something wrong.

The thud you were hearing is usually a mount. The difference in damping from one side to the other is most likely a bad shock.

How many miles are on the car? Shocks are a wear item so if they haven't ever been changed, it might be a good idea to change all of them. At the very least, replace the two front ones.

Everything should feel like new with the new mounts and and shocks.

Thanks all of u for the help,
The car is pretty old, it has run 114,500 miles and I am the 4th owner!!
I dont think I have the money to replace eveything right now, maybe just the mounts this time.
                Thanks again.
