Some possibilities: thermostat, fans, coolant temperature sensor, and worst of all, a blown head gasket. It isn't blowing out clouds of smoke is it?

no I wouldn't have test drove then but thats kind of what I figured either the thermostat or it might even need anti freeze coolant its a used car so you know how that is but thanks for giving me those possibilities though.

On a car of this age it wouldn't be surprising if the thermostat needed replacement. Generally these cars are pretty reliable, but if the owner of the car had been driving it hot all the time, you may wish to be wary, just by the fact the person hadn't been taking care of the car. Otherwise, it's probably pretty simple. Good luck
