    Gear oil????

I am doing my tranny this weekend, but due to lack of funds I need a cheap alternative gear oil, until next month when I can get some Red Line Synth. What would you recommend?

How's the shifting on cold mornings, I've heard synth is a litle picky until it warms up.

I use the moble 1 myself but I know several people that run the penzoil syncromesh and love it. I have drive there cars before and after and notice a difference. I would never run penzoil or quakerstate myself though.

ya id stay away from pennzoil altho they are getting better the new synthetic is much better. othercompanies make syncro mesh tho. im gonna try to find some 60 ish wieght to run in my gear box. or maybe try lucas pure synthetic in there.

valvoline 75w/90. gear oil non-synthetic. you want ot save your tranny stay thick. synthetic is thinner even tho is says its he same weight.

I want to go synth, but if regular would be better for the syncros' then regular it is. Quick question, Shouldn't gear oil be changed every so often?

If you use lucas you shouldn't have any problem with the syncros. Lucas clings to everything.

85/140 is for towing F250 truck differentials. I was told that GL5 will eat up brass and thats what our syncros are made of. I have syncromesh from penzoil and I love it. I don't have any problems in the cold or my 1st to 2nd shift.

gl5 wont hurt brass. and 75/140 is not for big truck diff's only fords 8.0 and 8.8 and 9 inch when they have tractionlock use it.

in the owners manual for the escorts, it says to use ATF fluid. but in all the other cars (proteges, MX3, etc) it says to use 75/90.

I'm running mobil 1 synthetic, because it was the ONLY 75/90 that I could find in town. good thing it works well.

DO NOT, i repeat DO NOT!!!!! use lucas in a manual tranny. I tried it, and 3 days later my synchros were shot and I had to park the car because I couldn't drive it over 10mph. I had never leaked a drop from the tranny for 2 years, but after 3 days of lucas, I had fluid dripping from both axle seals as well as the drain plug.. Lucas is probably fine for automatics, but I think it messes with what the manuals need, and turns to bad mojo.
