    pressure loss

I hate to keep posting but I cannot find anything on this anywhere.

I am losing pedal pressure when holding the clutch in.

Here's the setup - - Just got done doing a tranny install with flywheel, clutch, etc...... I had replaced both the master and slave cylinders about 6mo. ago due to the same problem, seemed to go away but it came back again. As far as leaks there are none, the line between the reserve and the master is new steel, and the one from the master to the slave is about a year old, mixed line (some rubber some steel).

I'm not sure if I bled the line correctly, I used same as bleeding the brakes, 3 pump hold the last open bleeder, repeat........no air is in the line (as far as I can tell) used a half a bottle of brake fliud doing it.

    What am I missing?

make sure your line is sealed properly. you dont have to be able to see the leak it may be very very slight but air doesnt need much room.

I took the extra time made sure the line was seated before I tightened it down, I just hope if I bleed it again I may get the pressure to stay, but I think I'll have to replace the cylinders again anyway.

Confirmed; one of them is definately bad.

Which would be more likely to be bad?

I'd bet it's the master cylinder.

Do you see any leaks any where? Usually when the master cylinder goes out you will see a leak under the dash, slave cylinder usually leaks where you can see it. You might even check the lines to make sure there isn't a loose fitting.

If it's blowing by internally then there will not be any obvious external leaks.

When I replaced the master last time it was doing the same thing. I did a pressure test on it and it was losing pressure, for every 2lbs I'd put in it, it would lose 1lb., as for the fittings only took off the fitting at the slave cylinder, and that is seated.

I got it now, it's the slave cylinder again, pulled the rubber boot off and low and behold fluid everywhere.

That one is a PITA, the top bolt is under the motor mount, oh well, what's another two hours under the car.

That's weird I have never really have a problem with slave cylinders going. Usually once they are replaced I have had them last for a long time. If they are going faulty shortly there after you may consider completely flushing the line with fresh fluid.

Stop using cheap brakefluid and use synthetic and that will solve your problem. Brake fluid absorbs moisture and DOES have a shelf life of 30 days after opened unless you have synthetic. Synthetic does still absorb some but less than 10% of what regular fluid absorbs. If you want to completely stop the problem although you have to change every brake and clutch part in the system. Convert to DOT 5. I have plans of converting to DOT 5 but have alot of other things to complete first. Right now I am using valvoline dot 4 synthetic.

I've never had a problem either. This is the first I've heard of someone having a problem with the slave cylinder.

I also use synthetic dot 4.

Does synthetic DOT 4 pass by the seals if you've previously run regular non-synthetic & change or what?? I don't want to replace my calipers all over again.

Quick update: fixed the slave, pressure is back to normal.

Is there any problems switching from regular brake fluid to DOT 4 synthetic?

I agree with bpt323, I just got done putting my whole front end back together I don't want to have to do it again.
