    Calling all autocrossers

Just like to start a thread for any and all autocrossers out there in Clubprotege land. A place to share set-ups, tire pressures, mods etc. To kick it off I run a 1999 Protege ES in scca's F street prepared class. I've got the eibachs, tokico blues, and sway bars off of the MP3. I'm looking at adding a limited slip diff, coil overs and camber plates. Has anyone out there done any of these or have any recommendations/advice on them? Also feel free to post results pix etc.

With any luck at all I'll be wringing the Frankenprotege at an autox this Sunday. I'll post results, if my schedule allows me to go, and if I don't like totally suck... it's been a few years since I crushed cones, but I gotta find out what this car's limits are; they're too high to find out on the street, for damn sure..
'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and
'90 AWD Protege, yet another GTR swap, Open class rallycar with a Toyota GT4 gearbox swap, thus crossing the line between hobby and mental illness. And a Brabus E55 K8, removing all doubt.

I ran my 2003 ES in my region's Street Open once this year. I have the Mazdaspeed suspension and an ebay short ram intake. The alignment is set within factory specs and the tires were some well worn Toyo TPT all seasons. I have the automatic with the sport shift option. The surface of the lot was wet and sandy. I placed mid pack overall- which I thought was pretty good considering the tires and transmission. I couldn't get it to downshift back to 1st in a couple spots on course and had to lug out of the corner way out of the powerband.

Just remember, crushing cones is much cheaper than crushing curbs. What have you done to the Frankenprotege?

I was always curious how the sportshift auto would work. I race with a guy who runs a similar set up in his 2002 ES, but without the sport shift option, and he has the same problem not being to go down to first. Do you guys run scca solo 2 rules or do you have different classes?

I'm here. Drivin' a 94ish pro DX in SM. The long hand mod list can be found in my CD though my sig, but so far I've put a BP in with the LX trans, H&R spring, KYB struts, and about -2.5* camber in the front and about -1* in the rear. I'm dickin' around with my tire psi but I'm thinkin' around 38 psi in front and 45 in the rear. Soon I'll have rear disk and a header on.

94 Protege LX: HX-35, Megasquit, ect...
98 Subaru Legacy GT-DD: 1 inch lift, and all the standard N/A stuff.

I run in the Detroit region. I have the Protege DX which is stock for rallycross and the Escort LX E for STS class in autocross. I have the Koni's and Ground Control coils on the LX E and they are great, real nice ride, but real stiff. I have them set on 1.5 turns (stiff) out of 2 turns. I love them. I am running the Falken 615's in 205/15/50. After 2 solo events this year I am setting 5th in points for STS autocross, and I will run my first rallycross of the year this weekend. Pics will follow.

Good to have you Photo! Wouldn't it have been easier just to start with an LX? I'm in the same boat with my '99 ES though. I need to do the rear disc/larger front brake swap. I think the easiest way will just be to find a totaled 2001-2003 and take the whole lot. Do you have camber plates, or did lowering the car change it that much? I ran my '94 LX at 36 and 42 with the old BFG dot racing compund. The front stuck really well, but the turn in was a little slower. I was always adjusting the rear until I got it to pivot just right. I was looking through my old notes, and 42 psi seems to have been the happy medium. I'm running this weekend, and hopefully will have some pix and tire data to share.

I'm jealous of you Grav1ty, I haven't done a track day since my 6 year old was in diapers. I saw your pix, and it looked like one hell of a time. That mustang looked hurt though. He might be ok, but I'll bet his wallet is in a hurting way. Awesome shot in the esses! There is a wonderful sense of fulfilment in passing a sports car in a four door "grocery getter". It's even better when they stop by in the pits in their new 911, look your car over, and cry. Is STS full of civic si's in Detroit also? They're the reason I'm in FSP. That, and Andy Hollis is in my division running one. Let me know how the rallycross goes. That looks like entirely too much fun. Let us know how it goes. That's something I'll have to try at some point. Remember, go like hell, keep the shiny side up, and never let your ego outrun your contact patches.

What has been done to the Frankenprotege... here's the thread about the silly car..

What we have for mods is... The entire drivetrain is out of a 323 GTR from the lugnuts to the intake. Link ECU, so no damn flapperdoor AFM. I upgraded to their latest software upgrade, which meant putting in things like a wideband O2 sensor and an airtemp sensor and other stuff like rewiring the injector harness to be able to run sequential injection. Miata ignition system to be able to run that Link. Igniter, cam angle sensor. I got some bigass HKS coilpack for a miata that ain't in production anymore, but it sparks real good so what the hell. Magnacore wires. RC550cc injectors, all custom intake plumbing, turboXS BOV,Spearco IC frontmount. ACT clutch. Lessee what else... Fidanza flywheel, HIGHLY recommended. 2.5" exhaust, magnaflow muffler. 3rd gen RX7 fuel pump. Braided brakelines, GTR 11" rotors, and I think it needs more brakes. Right now it looks like I'll be sending my dead pads to Porterfield to get relined in R4S compound. Viscous LSD rear diff. Whiteline swaybars, B&G springs. Some interior stuff like seats and pillar mount guages.
Aside from the wheels & rotors, and the lowered ride height, the car looks bone stock. Right now it's tuned to about 23psi and is just faster than snot. Still finetuning. I had to back the timing off a little bit for some knock I was getting from high gear low rpm pulls, and it's still running a bit too rich above 5krpm, but we're getting close enough that I figure I can go thrash in a parking lot for a bit.

That's light for AWD. I'm a little ignorant on the rally cars, but wasn't the GTR a purpose-built open class rally car, meant for competition only?

The GTR was the homologation special, never sold in the US. Ther was a variant called GTR Ae that was pretty much a factory rallycar. Someone on the east coast has one for sale...

I would have been alot happier if I was rowing my own gears. But it did OK. The first half of the course was pretty tight. I kept it in 1st gear and was able to keep the engine right where I wanted it- of course the crappy tires wouldn't allow me to keep the car where I wanted it, but.... It wasn't all bad. I just wish I could have got back down to 1st gear after a pivot cone. Normally I autox and do track events with my 1992 Saturn SC, but it's down for a clutch replacement.

My region's Street Open is a "run-what-ya-brung" class as long as you're on SCCA defined "street tires"- 140 treadwear or higher. We also run all the other SCCA Solo classes as well as we are a sanctioned SCCA region (www.wichitascca.org).

Those are great classes to bring a lot of the street racer kids into legal racing. I love listening to them talk about how auto-x is way more fun than drag racing, cheaper too. I run locally with the Texas Spokes sports car club,(www.spokes.org)and with sowdiv in SCCA, and we have gained many converts from the tuner crowd. Before scca started sm and sm2 we had a class called street mod, and then street mod tire for non-racing rubber. What class do you run the SC2 in? I suffered my only loss in my '94 LX to an SC2. I was amazed at how well that car worked. I also raced against Mike Kramer a few times in his National championship ssc SC2. I'm still in shock that such a cool car came out of GM.
