Looking for help on how to detail and clean the engine

In the past I've tried taking a toothbrush, some paper towels and a little degreaser to try to clean the engine. It doesn't work very well.

Can anyone offer help or tips on a more effective way of cleaning the engine?

    Thanks!

When I used to work in detail we used to keep the car running and spray the engine down with a all purpose cleaner and then hot pressure wash everything. Cover the car and rotor with a plastic bag so no moisture gets in the cap. That seemed to work good.

I once used a whole can of degreaser in my engine bay because of all the dirt and grease. It worked very well, just make sure to take your battery and air intake pipe out to make it a little easier to get everything. Also don't go nuts with the pressure washer near the distributor or spark plugs.

I've tried engine degreasers without any luck...either with a pressure gun, or if you have the time with a bunch of rags and some strong liquid soap...like that orange bottled ones.

You can't go wrong with a few cans of brake cleaner and compressed air.

i have had very good luck with going to one of those DIY coin op car washes... i use a whole can of degreaser under the hood, and let it soak while i wash the rest of the car. then i hit the motor with a steaming hot pressure wash... seems to work well :D

^^^^^when i was managing a detail shop, thats exactly how we did it. if you wanted it shiny (which i thought was kind of stupid) we doused it with a leather/vinyl treater and it stayed that way till you washed it again. unfortunately, it also attracted dirt, so you had a shiny brown ass engine after about 3 or 4 months.
