Anyone know what year protege is compatible with a 2nd gen escort gt? I'm looking for the bumper innerds of the protege for a body kit that I will be installing on my scort.

I learned that the hard way when I bought a 91 Escort that wasn't a GT with a good engine but bad transmission. I was going to swap my crashed 94 Protege's tranny into it. I ended up having to have the Ford's tranny repaired but got a great deal for $500 for the repair. The car had only cost me $200 but the A/C went bad a month after I got it and had a cracked windshield. Once again: 90-94 Protege equals 91-96 Escort-GT

What he means is that the car bodies are the same as in LX Escort and GT. The drivetrains are different hence why you can't swap a 1.8 into a LX. Now I am a escort person myself and have seen many things done to escorts. So Mysta316 knows what he's talking bout b/c I've know him since Escort Racing Development Team(aka - ERDT) was around. Mysta you know who I am I use to go by TSME on ERDT and still do on Escort Underground. Actually an escort person should know who I am if you were on ERDT and are on Escort Underground.
Edit ~ I feel like a tard... I just can type correctly b/c I can't tell you how many times I have seen a BP in LX or Wagon. Durh thanks for the correction Sarge & Rusty. I got too much escort **** rattling around in my head.Last edited by LadiesMan; 06-15-2006, 09:52 PM.Yes I am TSME from ERDTOnline = www.erdtonline.com

For matters of the original subject of this discussion (chassis parts) any 91-96 escort or tracer is the same as any 91-94 Protege. They're all the BG chassis.
I've got a 1.8 BPT in my LX Wagon. Like rusty said, it's a pretty easy swap. Things just bolt together. They bolt together because of the chassis being the same.

I will repeat what I said. In general, meaning for most parts, the Protege DX or LX of the 1st generation will interchange with the Escort but ONLY with the GT version of the Escort and it's GT siblings. Here's an example you CAN'T argue with me about: I read so much, on this and other Protege forums, that the 91-96 Escort engines and transmissions were swappable with the 91-94 Escort that I bought a 91 Escort with only the transmission bad. That's becasue I had a crashed 94 Protege at home with a perfectly good transmission. When I took it to the guy that repairs my transmissions cheap, he told me they were not interchangeable. I asked around in the forums and a guy who works in a tranny shope elsewhere in the country stated that you can make it work but that I would have to remove the bellhousing off of the Escort tranny and put it on the Protege tranny. I kept looking and asking around why they weren't just a simple swap. I eventually found out from all the guys here that know what they are doing that it has to be an Escort GT only and not just any 91-96 Escort. It can also be the Escort LX-E(4 door version of the GT) or a Mercury Tracer LTS. Those are the ONLY perfectly effortless interchangeable engine/trannys. I then noticed that the non-GT 91 Escort I had bought had a 1.9 engine while I knew my Protege was a 1.8 like all DX and LX Proteges. The 1.9 is made by Ford and the 1.8 by Mazda. Yes, that's old news. Even though the DX is SOHC and the LX is DOHC, they are both 1.8 liters. Now who's going to tell me that they can just take out a 1st gen Protege tranny and put it on a non-GT 91-96 Escort with no modifications? I will be hearing about the long post by a new member soon.

the transmission in an escort LX is the same INTERNALLY as a protege DX. they are both mazda f-series transmissions. what you heard about swapping bellhousings is probably true, the escort bellhousing is made to fit the ford engine, the protege one the mazda engine.
no one ever said that the transmissions were a direct swap.
