    DOHC--->SOHC MTX swap compatability?

    Hi guys, I have a quick question about the trannys on the 1st gen protege. I am looking at swapping my SOHC 5sp tranny into a DOHC protege. I know they are different trannys but my Haynes manual states they are "virtually" identical except for different gear ratios. So will my 5sp SOHC tranny bolt up to a DOHC engine?

    sure they are I just did the swap and my SOHC tranny bolted right on to the DOHC engine but you need the flywheel from the SOHC engine.

      Nah, they are not the same, but it WILL work with the flywheel and all. A g-series box might be more advisable for the added power. But you will get away with an f-series, as long as you don't turbocharge it or anything

      I, however, would NOT recommend it. Get one from an Escort GT or another Protege with the DOHC motor.

        W00t!!

        no **** they are not the same. the "f"F has longer gears. and how can you say that it wont work. do you know anyone with a BP and a "F" tranny!! is the tranny weaker, yes, but i mean it is only 127hp. it is the same tranny as found on the bp-me!
        When you turn your car on... does it return the favor?

          But, see, the problem is he is putting it on a car that already has a g-series. There's no need to go backwards. And, yes, I have seen a BP & and an F tranny work.

            Alright, so it will work but I'll need the SOHC flywheel for the SOHC tranny correct? Sounds good, thanks guys. And the reason I am "going backwards" is because I already have an SOHC tranny that works great and I am looking at a DOHC Protege which has a messed up tranny.

              Don't take offense here man but I am not building a drag racer here. Just a little daily driver which is not even worth driving hard anyways. I have a Probe for that. I am not expecting to be grenading my tranny from the extra 20HP in this little four banger no matter what you say.

                  Didn't you already have a SOHC transmission?

                            Alrighty, I have axles and mounts on my SOHC parts car. What you are saying is I'll need to use the SOHC mount and axles on the SOHC tranny? Others have told me all I'll need is the SOHC flywheel (and clutch?). Oh well, I guess I'll find out when I start taking them apart
