Hi guys, I have a quick question about the trannys on the 1st gen protege. I am looking at swapping my SOHC 5sp tranny into a DOHC protege. I know they are different trannys but my Haynes manual states they are "virtually" identical except for different gear ratios. So will my 5sp SOHC tranny bolt up to a DOHC engine?

Nah, they are not the same, but it WILL work with the flywheel and all. A g-series box might be more advisable for the added power. But you will get away with an f-series, as long as you don't turbocharge it or anything
I, however, would NOT recommend it. Get one from an Escort GT or another Protege with the DOHC motor.2006 Mazda 3 hatchback manual

no **** they are not the same. the "f"F has longer gears. and how can you say that it wont work. do you know anyone with a BP and a "F" tranny!! is the tranny weaker, yes, but i mean it is only 127hp. it is the same tranny as found on the bp-me!When you turn your car on... does it return the favor?

Alright, so it will work but I'll need the SOHC flywheel for the SOHC tranny correct? Sounds good, thanks guys. And the reason I am "going backwards" is because I already have an SOHC tranny that works great and I am looking at a DOHC Protege which has a messed up tranny.Last edited by BlakProber; 11-11-2003, 07:45 PM.
