Kia tranny review, it blew too!

Well, on wednesday, was at the track and got in a bunch of runs (14 plus i think) and everything held together nicely, best time was a 12.97@115 on street tires! went back on friday night and on the second run, didn't even get a chance to mount the new slicks, Pop went the tranny shifting from 2nd to 3rd again! In conclusion, The kia tranny is just about as strong as my previous two trannys, (f series north american and g series from japan) which imo, wern't too strong. now i'm left bummed out and looking yet again, for another gearbox!. Popping it out tomorrow, will post pics if i find anything interesting.

sucks too hear, if it turns out to be the diff pin that is a known issue with all the mazda trannys, quite a few people have welded them, there is a PR kid who just posted an 11 second pass using the kia tranny (IIRC) maybe ask him what he did differently.

good luck getting it all back together, and BTW nice time slip in the other thread!

well, one of the spider gears blew up into a bunch of peices and took out the shifter gate so i need a bell housing and the 4 spider gears.

arent there only 2 spider gears and 2 differential pinion gears? not to get technical or anything.

ya, you need to take the diff out and just weld it first.

That is notorious of all Mazda trannies. The diff pin get loose and bye bye tranny. The first thing you have to do is to weld the diff pin to avoid this inconvenience.

But the Kia tranny is the strongest. I don’t have any problems since I install that tranny.

actually the diff pin didn't let go, it's all intact but one of the spider gears blew up and the other one lost all of it's teeth.

well that is secondary to go after the pinionshaft itself. LSD is the only cure for this disease

Yeah LSD. My box is pretty mint now. And with a PAR Straight cut 3rd gear its tops (and sounds good).

Otherwise just weld the diff as a locker.
