    wet windy roads = bad

while driving back from a family thing near shelton, WA on sunday, the roads were wet, it was rainy, and some guy was stopped RIGHT around a corner waiting for the person in front of him to quit stalling and take his left (there was no, and had been no oncoming traffic for awhile... i have no idea what was going on...)
it sucks, since if we had involved cops and insurance and all that, it would have been pinned as my fault, but it hardly could have been avoided... i reacted as fast as i possibly could, but man did i ever slide...
    ...sigh... well whatever...
    car damage:

i figure i need a new grille (and i almost customed a mesh one on saturday but decided not to yet... goodthing, eh?), probably new headlights, since the grey plastic parts are pretty broken...
hopefully i can bend the radiator mount back into it's rightful place, then i can *maybe* bendthe hood back to somewhat good looking order...
i will probably be getting a new one though...
i have no idea how much on average these parts run for at a junkyard though... anybody have any estimates?
my dad, with his 20+ years of collision center body work estimated to use all new parts and plus the cost of labor to get it looking like new again, it'd be about $1200...
i know if i do a lot of it myself and use used parts, it'l be considerably less...
i'm not worried about the paint either...

heh, and practically no damage to the other vehicle...
i bent their hitch a little... that's about it...

YEah was about to ask looks purty low speed. His quote sounds reasonable. Junk yard parts tend to vary a lot by area so i would suggest checking www.car-parts.com for prices some may have in your area

Might as well just get the gtx swap done too!

i was actually thinking about the carbon fibre hood...
        e-specs would be nice too...
        mmh, glass with clear corners...
unfortunately just those two things would run me at least $700 together...
        would be nice........................

another thing, escort hoods are completely flat... as much as i like the look of carbon fibre, i like the way the protege hoods looks...
        still considering it though...

i was searching through car-parts.com for awhile, and i'm probably going to try to bend\epoxy most of the damage...
the only thing i KNOW needs replacing is the grille...

heh, oh yeah... side note, right before this i threw some amber bulbs into my front turn signals... it made them VERY orang at night... it's cool...

um, yeah, i was going 30 around the corner... the road is usually 50 and it was a suggested 35 for corner speeds...
i was braking before i even saw the guy...
i'm not gonna say oh it was their fault for stopping, because it wasn't, some guy ahead of them was just trying to get down his driveway or something...

yeah, i know anyone would say it's my fault... i'm lucky the guy didn't really care and didn't really want to involve police or insurance or anything... i'd rather fix it myself than get screwed on insurance.

i'm glad i was smart enough to be going under the speed limit, because it could have been a lot worse...
especially since my girlfriend discovered the passenger seat belt (automatic shoulder belt) doesnt lock up when it needs too...

it was a pretty low speed impact... had they been 5 more feet ahead, i don't think i'd have hit them...

unfortuneatly, in most accidents where one car is stationary, the car that does the 'hitting' is 90% at fault... some exception being if you roll back into someone at a redlight...even that situation is subjective. this sucks, this is 2 protege's in the past week (mine ) .. both white . i'll tell you what bro, $1200 is the MOST you should pay if you do the work yourself. just get a new hood (could price one under $250 if you need one), have it prepared and painted off the car (guestimate around here it's about $300 tops for labor and materials to prep and paint a new hood.. obviously this is 300 on top of 250 for the hood)... drag that bitch home.. head to the junkyard and pick up some headlight brackets (the gray plastic part... can be seperated from the headlight housing itself if done VERY carefully) shouldn't run you more than 40 at the yard, and say another 20 for a grille and maybe 15 to paint it yourself. all of this **** is fairly inexpensive, and as for the radiator mount, judging by those pictures (and it's hard cause you have no wide angle shot of it) should only need a hammer.. granted after you've propped the hood up and pulled off the grille and headlights. maybe some touch up paint for your bumper, and thats it. shouldn't cost you very much at all. i wish much luck to you bro.
            peace

YEah i think really with that minor of damage your biggest exspense would just be getting it painted to match. If you do all the work yourself it should be really reasonable anyways.

yeah, i figured it wouldn't cost too much to do all myself... painting is no problem at all (my dad works at a collision center and has been the head painter for about 20 years... he'd touch it up for me *sometime* when he's not busy)

i plan to take a trip to the junkyard saturday...
hm, i didn't know i could take off the grey plastic from the headlights... my dad said i'd need whole new ones... **** that if i don't have to. that's helpful, thanks

grille, i'm sure that won't be a big deal either... i have all the materials for making a mesh one... almost did that last saturday, now i'm glad i didn't...

wasn't there another first gen accident recently?
either way, two is enough... two is more than enough...
                  agh...

i'm sick of having an auto though... i wish i could find a dead or near death 5spd in good body condition... then i'd just swap all the good stuff over...
it wouldn't be cheaper than fixing all this, but it would be an interesting project...

thank you all for the kind words

still runs great, that's what matters...

accidents like this confuse me... it's like, thinking back, i responded as quick as i possibly could... i was already slowing down since it was a wet corner... then i saw the explorer, and i hit the brakes...
sounds simple, but then, since it was wet, i slid...
i don't know how that really could have been prevented...
i just got new tires... i thought they were siped, but upon close inspection, they are not... i wonder how much of a difference that makes...
but yeah, i agree, it pretty much was my fault, because the guy ahead of me was doing something completely legal...
so was i, but i hit him, he didn't hit me...

nice guy and all, we didn't swap any info... i didn't want a ticket, and he had hardly any damage... plus my insurance is high enough...
i realize now, that if he wanted to, he could have memorized my plate and filed a hit-and-run...
that would REALLY suck... let's just hope i trusted the right nice guy...

Dood, That sucks incredibly hairy penis. I know how slick the roads are when it starts raining. * shutters * Damn the mini van turning into Burger King!

Good luck on your hunting for parts. I wish I could help you, but, I'm a sol man. I know nothing of Mazda parts. Only reason I'm on here is because my two friends are on here. ( ProtegePILOT and ProtegeKID )

If you lived close, I'd try and hunt you down some parts myself. My grandfather owns a Salvage yard. But, He really doesn't have many cars under 15 years old.

Once again, good luck and watch those freakin mini vans.

well, we pounded\pulled it all back into place yesterday...
it looks better... for the most part...

we looked at it all pretty closely, and i probably will need new headlights, since the grey part, and the black part behind it are both broken... on both sides, in different places...
new grille is a given... thankfully the radiator wasn't damaged, which would suck because it'sonly 2 years old.
the hood looks okay, but you can definitely tell i was in a collision.
especially by looking at the slightly inset headlights (when i get new ones, i'll have to bend the mounts out again... it was pointless to do it yesterday and put the broken ones back on)
                            ...
