    what did i mess up?

hey guys im pretty new here but im not new to working on cars. thats why i feel really dumb for doing what i did. ok here goes, the car is a 92 tracer ltz the battery was dying so i though id put a fully charged one on, when putting on the new one i totally messed up and flame me all you want i switched the terminals around and now the car wont start. the headlights turn on but nothing else. what could i have fried? this is what i was thinkin it could be
    - the 80 amp main fuse in the engine bay fuse block
    - starter solenoid
    - possibly ecu?
    anyone have any suggestions??

    That sucks man.

I'd say you're on the right track, I was going to suggest trying another ECU.

its likely you blew some fuses. Try with those first as Jho suggested

ECU is an, unfortunately, strong possibility. However, your choice of checks is good. Fuses is ALWAYS the first way to go. You check the ones in the car and then the ones in the engine bay. Remember to check fusible links, if any. Those are cables that fry themselves so they can't transfer anymore electricity when there's a strong short. You just replace the wire. Those are easy to see because if they go, the insulation looks like cheese fries but not in yellow. Next, check that you didn't damage the battery, itself. If it's good, take a wire directly from the positive post of the battery to the starter. If it starts, you know what to do. To get a hold of another ECU, go to ebay. They go for cheap every once in a while. Or, just post in the wanted section. Someone here probably has one lying around. By the way, you said LTZ, your car is an LTS, I imagine. Ofcourse, I know the Mercury Tracer LTS is the same as a 1st gen Protege engine-wise.

cool thanks for the heads up guys. i found some fuses online thatll work because i was having a hard time finding them locally. i definately wanna get it running asap. its got 50k on the car; the motor only needs a valve cover gasket and thorogh cleaning and its good to go. itll make a perfect daily so i dont beat on my se-r.

I'm confused. Are you saying you found out the problem is a blown fuse or are you saying you are buying replacement fuses without checking to see if a fuse is actualy blown?

look thru the little window on the top of the main fuse in the engine compartment, you will be able to tell if its blown just by lookin at it. i did the same thing tryin to jump my car.

you cant always tell its blown by looking at it. 99% of the time yes but not always.

................And that's what a test light is for. It takes one second to test a fuse with a test light, and five seconds to pull the fuse out, look at it, and put it back in.
