    Is custom catback worth it?

Hey guys, for about 500 dollars, we can probably get custom catback systems. I plan on getting a 2 inch catback exhaust. I was wondering if it'll actually give me a good amount of gain. Anyone tried custom exhaust either? Let me know with any suggestions or answers.

Its a decent investment. I think $500 is a little too much. I heard of different shops doing it for $150+, but that depends whether you already have a muffler and catalytic converter, if you want one. But is a nominal gain, 5hp maybe tops. It will also make your car loud, so long stints on the highway are not going to be very pleasant.

5 HP sounds kinda.... low. I mean not only am I going to have a gutted cat, but instead of having like a 1 1/4 piping, i'm going to make it 2 inch. I'm not sure what the piping size is right now... 1 1/4 is a guess. When you get catback exhaust's for other cars, you probably 10+. But 5 hp.. that sounds real low. 500 was a guess in case if I buy a new muffler, hi-flow cat, and piping.

Cat-backs should give you a bit more torque, so yes, it will feel accelerating a bit faster, but for HP, the gain is small. All the things you see on Ebay are lies, when some people say that a high-flow muffler will give you 12-15 hp! Thats bull, its just advertisement. You really need high-flow headers, cat, and muffler and either 2" or 2.25" piping in order to come to about 10 hp.

I know that those mufflers on ebay are pure bull****, but I thought with catback exhaust's you get at least 10+ hp. Even after dynotuned, I've seen graphs saying it has about 10 hp extra. I plan on just buying a hi-flow cat, with a real aftermarket muffler and custom catback piping. 2 Inch.. thats my plan. Oh ya... my mechanic who used to work on my car previously said he had gutted my cat. am i correct in thinking that our car actually has 2? I think the guy who worked on my car said he gutted out ONE cat. I doubt it's the one under the car. So I can either gut it out or put a hi-flow cat.. that would help right? I don't care bout hp or torque or anything. I just want my car to accelerate better lol

For $150, i doubt that you are getting 304 SS piping with mandrel-bends.
The exhaust system that a muffler shop is gonna do for you wont do very much other than give you a new exhaust system.
For an exhaust system to be effective, you need to have mandrel bends. A crush-bender (like muffler shops have) are useless as the 2.25" diameter piping suddenly becomes 1.5" where the bends are.
Mandrel benders are expensive so its hard to find a place with one. What you WILL find is performance shops using 304 SS with pre-bent elbows that they weld in.
A custom cat-back should run you in the area of $600-$800 (CDN...sorry, i dont know US pricing)
www.essentialspeed.com is releasing a header-back and a cat-back system for the 2gen protege. This system is available in your traditional, single muffler setup as well as a duall muffler set-up (Y-piped at the axle)

Do you happen to know the dimensions of the exhaust? You know.. what type of muffler on it. And pricing is another thing. And I'll buy the headers.. if we get any performance gain. I guess it won't be too bad bout having basic bolt-ons for the 1.5l
