    escort wagon beggin' for transplant

****! I didn't know there's a Ford escort forum in here. Anyways, I'm thinking of getting a wagon lately so I can put more stuff in the trunk. Anyways, I saw this '91 ford escort and it says it has 1.9L SOHC engine. I know this type of Ford engine is not made by Mazda so I don't really trust it. I'm pretty sure its possible for the wagon to get a BP transplant but any of you guys know what needs to be replaced? Is this the same swap procedure as the 323 hatchback? Can any of you guys give me more info on this? I'm not planning on racing the car. I actually want to keep the auto-tranny on the wagon.

    Thanks!

the BP swaps right in - the 1.9 is a 88hp POS. Check out feoa.net - you basically need BP, wiring, ECU, tranny (I think) - you might as well do a EGT/Pro LX brake swap on it ...

Why not buy an EGT - bigger than the 323 in the back and already has a BP.

Wiring meaning the VICS and the DISTY right? or do I have to remove and replace the entire wiring with a EGT wiring?

But the fact that ford build that motor scares me. And like I said. It is not for racing. I just need the space. Thank you.

yea dude, best bet is to find a protege lx or an escort gt, mercury tracer LTS and just drop the full subframe/motor/tranny/wiring harness. It's actually really easy to do, took me about 8 hours to drop one out of a V6 mx3 about 6 months back.

Then you just do the same to the wagon and lift the front end up, drop the subframe and **** onto a skid with a couple skateboards under it, slide it out, and slide the new stuff in you can also replace chassis bushings and replace some seals while its out.

            JACK.

pm me if you have any questions, mike moss knows too, he gave me a tutorial.

whats wrong with ford motors? 1.9 trans wont work with the 1.8, and you need the whole harness.

Since when does a wagon have a trunk?

Ha, ha. That's funny. I thought the same thing. Don't worry guy, we know you meant trunk "space". Anyway, I owned a 91 Ford Escort(non-wagon) with the same 1.9 engine. The engine was fine even with the age it had. Sure it's not strong torque but it's more than enough for your use. I bought it with a bad tranny for $200 and got the tranny fixed for $500. That was 3 years ago. Maybe the trannys are bad but the engine was fine with LOADS of miles on it. I had to also put a new timing belt but that has to be changed on any car. I also owned a 98 Ford Escort wagon. I also bought it with a problem which I fixed. It never bothered after that. My wife had an accident with it and I miss it. In 97 the CVH engine changed to a better design. That wagon's engine and transmission worked flawlessly. I bought it with 100,000 miles(actually 97,000). I may like the Proteges better but the A/C on that wagon was better than ANY A/C I have EVER owned wether it be Chevy, Mazda, Nissan, etc. It also has more room. Wow, as I'm writing this I'm remembering that I bought a 2nd gen Protege engine with tranny still attached and it fit in that wagon and I brought it home. I really miss that space. I got some Sikkens car paint for free off craigslist a few months ago, I had to try to fit the whole box in my Proty's trunk. I thought it would fit and the only way to do that was tilting it a bit. It ended up dripping some on my rear bumper. I HIGHLY recommend getting that wagon. Don't worry about the Ford vs. Mazda issue. That doesn't play in this situation. How much is the wagon and how many miles? The more miles, the better so you can get it mega cheap. If it drives really well, the miles aren's a problem for the engine. They're more of a problem with other components getting old and needing replacement (i.e., alternator, starter, pumps, etc.)

ford produced the engine under my hood.

the 1.9 is a economy motor at the fullest. but it can handle just as much as the bp when tuned and worked right, it's just a lower base hp to start.

go wander around feoa.net for a while, or talk to jeff. 1.9 with a 2.0 head, boosted, and running well over what a stock gtx can produce. or across the pond, they run the cvh as well and make loads of hp.

just because ford built it, you're scared? that's like a honda owner coming here and saying his car's faster because it's a honda and we drive mazda's. ford has plently of motors id take over others any day.

and the swap requires the entire front clip of a bp powered car, ecu, tranny, wiring/harness, axel, so on and so on. if you want ps, ac, or any type of accessory, you'll need all of that stuff too.

My mom has had a few escort wagons, although they could hardly get out of their own way, they were very economical and reliable. I don't like the 1.9, but I don't think it is such a bad engine.

Ok any car can be made fast as long as you have the money. I just want something reliable and thats the reason why I want to swap a BP on there. If this 1.9 ford engine is reliable then that's good I don't have to worry about the swap.

                          trunk, yeah, I meant space

as long as you dotn overheat the motor it will last a long time,
(my smog tech the mazda motors ave more problems after time with emissions caus ehte way they are built)
but the 1.9 istn to bad, you could drop in a 2.0 fo rless work than the bp, and have like 17 less ponis than a bp. hte 1.9 has like 110 of tourqu or so. its a tourque motor, just not alot of hp., ( have seen many chevy drivers and honda drivers with open minds) suprised it woudl take of. BUt just take care of it and dotn overheat it. (if timming belt goes its a nn interferancem otor) and easier to change timing belt!

the only thing to really worry about is the auto tranny if it has one. they die and overheat like crazy. flushed them regularly and if you can, cool it.
