    Rear Drive from AWD models....

not sure where to put this, so I'll try here...

Anyways, is there a place where I can get the rear drive from an AWD BG chassis any time I want, or is this one of those things where when I stumble on a good deal I need to buy it?

reason I ask, is Ive decided Im turning my CVH sideways, and using a mustang SVO tranny and AWD BG rear drive to make the escort RWD. Im sick of this fwd BS.

Also, can anyone tell me the differences in the steering systems between the FWD and AWD models? I would assume on the AWD models the steering rack is in the way of the driveshaft.... Thanks! Josh

    hey josh :D

the rear subframe/axles/etc. is a buy it if you can find it kinda thing. more so the subframe itself as i believe you can use a miata differential which is much more common. the subframe is one of those "well i cant seem to find one, i guess i'll sell my gtr transmission" kind of parts

good luck with the steering.. did you get in touch with that guy who drags the yellow rwd egt?

Hmm, someone say bf gtx rear subframe? I happen to have one of those laying about. Was planning on keeping it as a spare, but if someone makes me an offer I can't refuse, shipping from Seattle, I could part with it.

how hard is it to use a BF subframe on a BG car? wouldnt he then have a different lug pattern in the rear than in the front...?

good Q. AS long as his hubs and uprights bolt up, it wouldn't affect the bolt pattern, but I dunno if it'll bolt up to a bg car. Finding a BG gtx subframe, **** you might as well buy a lotto ticket, at least in this country. Tell you what. When I get achance I'll jack up the protege and see if there are any big differences tween the two frames.

well he will be converting a FWD... so one way or another i'm sure he could get the BF frame to bolt to the bg chassis. the issue is he would still need 4WD protege or gtx spindles and hubs... if they are even compatible with the BF subframe and lateral links .

as i said before josh, i think your BEST bet is going to be to find a BG gtx or 4wd protege complete rear end, with spindles/axles/everything. the driveshaft you could get from a miata, 4wd pro, or BF gtx, since you have to have a custom front end attached to it anyway.

this is pretty much the extent to which i researched this... when i was considering AWD with my gtr escort. a dream... forever lost.. lol

so, whats the Bf chassis exactly? Is it the JDM 323 GTr/X?

BF chassis = old body style of the 323. so a BF gtx is the 88-89 USDM gtx with the b6t :D. pre-91 mercury tracers were also built on the BF chassis.

a 90+ gtx would be overseas only, they were on the BG chassis like our cars, and they contain the BPT.

ah, so, either I find an uber rare AWD protege here, or import a rear subframe from abroad eh?

                      pretty much.

i just remembered, someone around here said they had a spare 4wd protege rear subframe.... trying to remember who. it might have been Clean4wd... it came up when i was trying to decide if i wanted to try to go AWD or not.

so, I was thinking and the way I see it I have 4 options...

                        BF chassis AWD
                        BG chassis AWD
                        Merkur XR4Ti RWD
                        Miata RWD

So, anyone have any thoughts on any of those, other then the obvious, that the BG chassis one is the simplest?

hmmm. Mazkid has a miata AND a protege, perhaps he would be nice enough to take some measurements for you

if you're going to go through this much effort, why not just back-half the car from the rear suspension mounts and put something substantial back there so you can really beat on it.

Yea, this is a toughy, and RWD would be simply awesome in a BG no doubt. Probably better off doing a miata drivetrain conversion or something to that effect. You'd simply have to source out a miata 1.8 tranny, driveshaft and complete rear end. You'll be able to get a shop to fab up a support structure for the rear no problem. And just have to get some custom mounts welded up.

As for the steering rack, see how a miata steers. I'm sure its nothing overly complicated, steering wheel -> shaft -> rack -> tierods. Also the steering rack is fairly tight to the firewall, maybe you can keep it, who knows.

                              JACK.
