    second hand smoke!!

    Howdy folks,

I recently bought a 96 mazy pro, second hand. well a smokewr owned it before me and as you can guess im not a smoker. so this presents a problem.

I have frebreezed the seats, floor trunk and head liner, I used 3 decent "cool breeze" air fresheners in the car. and if I air it out driving down the road when i get back in the car it will smell like "cool breeze" and ass. where should I clean that i havnt thought about?

and is there an air filter in the a/c and heat system i can replace?

help !! my car smells like ass

or very strong air fresheners and ass mixed

    anyone??

steam wash the carpets or leave a plate of cut-up apples in there or just buy carpet cleaner and wash everything...check other things, it might not be smoke smell(my car doesn't have it at all..then again i have a pimpin tree on my mirror)..maybe he/she left a window open one night

      Ewwwwwww, cigarette smoke!

That's next to impossible to get rid of. Steam cleaning or shampooing the seats and carpets will help. Replacing the headliner will be the only way to completely remove the odor from it.

depends how long the car was smoked in for. if its been like 10 years.... forget it.

i smoked in my escort for several months... and i smoked a lot. when i finally quit i soaked the entire interior with febreeze (like 2 bottles worth...), parked the car in the sun, and put 2 box fans on the sunroof, facing in. i opened all the windows and propped the hatch open...... and let it sit there ALL day with the fans on high.

it was pretty good after that.

i used to manage a detail shop and this was a question that got asked a lot.

my solution was to steam clean everything (we had a thermax 1800), spray the interior with a neutralizer (or i guess you could use febreeze), put about 5 or 6 boxes of arm&hammer baking soda in there, roll the windows up, and leave it in the sun or blast the heat for about an hour. that releases the chemicals and particulates from the cloth/padding in the seats and carpet. after that we steam cleaned it again, sprayed a fragrance in there (usually "new car smell" or "cherry") and let it dry.

if the smell was still there, we had this stuff that you put in the ac/heat vents that would absorb odors. it came in an aerosol can (if i can find some in my storage building i'll let you know what kind) and was like a foamy spray you shot directly into the vents. you let it foam up and then turned the heat on low and let it run. if that didnt do it. . . you needed a new interior. we charged $100 for that service, and i'd say 99% of the time your car smelled like it just left the assembly line afterwards.

i can only remember one time it didnt work, and it was because the lady that owned the car was a damned chain smoker, she never rolled down the windows, and had been smoking in the car for 10 years. sad thing was that it was a mercedes, and she wanted it cleaned to sell. sucked for her, because although all that we did made it better, you could still smell it pretty damn strong. before we did the cleaning, i thought i was going to puke if i rode in it with the windows up. it was ****ing awful.

We have a customer that chain smokes in their Saab convertable. None of us like to work on it, let alone pull it into the shop. One day I had to do some work on it that required me to be inside the whole time, and on my back. Before I worked on it, I took it for a nice long ride with the top down. It was a snowy day in the middle of January. I don't know if having the top down aired it out or my face was too numb, but it didn't seem to smell too bad after that.

Good luck with that, I once bought a mint 91 Accord that had been smoked in. Three professional attempts to get the smell out and then it was gone. Could never get the smell out of that sucker. This was a beautiful low miles car, but every time I got in it I wanted to puke.

                      well ive had some luck.

I still am finding interior plastic to wipe off, and i overwhelmed it with car air fresheners, but the obvious success story goes to a prodct called "Ozioum"

claims to be the Ozone cleaner. beside the crappy smell of the Ozioum itslef which goes away, this seems to have worked.

and to top it all off, i found the product at ....*shakes head in disgust* Wal-Mart.

ozium sounds kind of familiar. whatever we used to use might have been that or something like it. i think ours was a Stoner product, which if any of you have used any of their products, you know its expensive as shiat.

I've had good luck with just steam cleaning the hell outa the car. Use 3M car shampoo (for washing the extrerior). Got the smell right outa my car.
