I've read about the BG rear diff upgrade to 90-93 Miata LSD, but is it a direct swap? Do I have to do anything special to make it work, or just put it on?

Do you have the whole thing or just the guts? My streetcar came with the guts from a miata lsd, and they would have bolted right into the stock prot housing with no mods (but I put my old factory plate diff back there instead). But I don't know about any potential fitment issues invoved with the whole schmear.'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and

i was told that the diff case is different externally, the mounting points are all different. you have to swap the internals.

Thats what I did to my 4wd pro is just swap in the miata LSD unit into the rear diff.. The nice thing is the plates are still avail for rebuilds, and throw a .010" shim in there to get a little more grab... Old trick from my days as a maz tech with 1st gen rx7's... No need to search for a GTR rear diff...

Well i was at work one day and got bored and looked up the case number for my gtx and a miata without LSD they are the same. However miata with LSD is a diffrent case number. However for some reason i dont think that the mounting would be diffrent from LSD to non lsd diffs. could be wrong thou

Ok, I'm now ressurrecting this thread (it's not THAT old, only a year and 8 months...)
I'm starting to look into this a bit for the car I'll be picking up in a couple weeks. I've not really run across mention of any 90-93 Miata diffs that haven't been either the Viscous type or an open type. I'm starting to dig around on miata.net, but does anyone have any other resources to start looking at?

Using the larger diff requires a different housing also. To do the change on a miata requires you get a new driveshaft (pinion length is longer) and axles (two-piece, rather than 1-piece.)
I don't think the housing from a miata will bolt up to the BP rear crossmember without some serious modding, and I don't know yet if the splines would be the same on the hub side as for the miata side of things, or if the proper-splined hub could be pressed into the BP knuckle without some machining or deep digging to find a bearing that fits.
I suppose there's always the option of a Lincoln Locker, but I plan on maybe using the car as a DD in the winter, and that would kinda suck.
I was talking to a friend yesterday, and he was reading somewhere that one of the teams that used to race with viscous diffs (I'm not sure if it was miatas or something else) used to drain all of the fluid from the viscous diffs, and instead of the oem silicone fluid, used the same silicone filler that is used in breast implants. Apparently, it did it's job VERY well.
Plus, you could have a sticker on the car, "Powered by Boobies"...
