tentatively WTB: 91-95 EGT/escort wagon or 90-94 323 with good body

i discovered some severe rust in the rear strut towers of my beater this weekend.... so i am tentatively looking for a new beater. basically i have to find something before the struts say hello to my rear speakers...

i need a car that is relatively rust free, relatively dent free. bad motor/trans ok. auto or 5 speed doesnt matter. oh yeah, cheap is good!

Yup, your rear towers are wasted!

On a side note, I just replaced the rear strut mounts in my mom's Protege LX tonight. When I removed her LR strut, the tower turned into pretty much what your LR looked like.

Rust owns us...I know my Pro GT is feeling the affects of re-welded rear towers.

        How'd that repair come out?

Is the car the same/worse/different than before? What did you pay?

My mom is getting an estimate on Monday.

Buy a cheapie welder fix it yourself for less than a pro and you still have the welder. If all or most of the tower is still there it is an easy fix. It doesn't have to look pretty just strong. You can use the old shape to basically form a new tower and then start welding. I guarantee once you have run a couple of seams you will get pretty good. You can get a pretty decent low amp welder good for autobody for around couple hundred bucks.

I've got a nice Snap-On mig welder at work, I'm just not the best welder.

Ya, but the only way to get better is to work at it, and there is no better incentive than to fix what you have yourself, rather than pay through the nose. Plus you have the satisfaction of saying I did that myself. The most useless and limiting word in the dictionary is cannot. just remember it doesn't have to look pretty, just strong.

I guarantee the more you do the better you will get. go hack up some old sheet metal and get to practising.

Thanks for the encouraging words Pat.

You're absolutely right, but my mom got quoted a great price IMO, I think it was like $125 to fix both sides, so we're just goint to have a professional take care of it.

That is a definite steal at that price, I wouldn't do it myself either with a price like that.
