24 hours of LeMons in California

I read about this in Car and Driver. It is a race where there is a $500 limit on spending on the car except safety equipment. Tires and brakes count as safety equipment. The team that completes the most laps wins. Last year's winner of the first ever 24hrs of LeMons was a 1980's Toyota Corolla entered by Road and Track that completed about 1100 laps. Some of the Teams had sponsors such as Tire Rack and Yokohama Tires. I didn't notice any BGs or any Mazdas in the race. But it sure would be cool if Club Protege members in California would enter one this year. I know there is shorter endro hornet races all over the country with similar rules. But this race gets coverage in major car mags. Imagine ClubProtege.com on the windshield of the car taking the victory lap!

Because racing isn't just for rich idiots... it's for all idiots.

24 hours of LeMons in Michigan

Then I noticed this from the official website of ARCA

24 Hours of LeMons Detroit To Make Debut at Flat Rock
FLAT ROCK, MI (3-16-07)-- For over 25 years, Flat Rock Speedway has held Enduro-type races, consisting of 250 laps around the .25-mile oval. The idea is simple-survive the distance, dodge the spinning and crashing cars and be the first to complete the 250 circuits for the win.
A California-based group has a little twist on the idea of Enduro-type racing. While it's termed the "24 Hours of LeMons-Detroit," the event at Flat Rock Speedway will not be 24 hours, but 8 hours on each day Saturday and Sunday, September 29-30.

And this event is not your typical Enduro race. Officials for the event, from DriversDoor Contract Publishing, have some wild and crazy twists and turns to the event. The first one was staged at Altamont, CA Speedway last November and came away with coverage in magazines such as Sport Compact Car, Car and Driver, Sports Car International, Auto Week and European Car.

"Jay Lamm from DriversDoor met with us this winter and was searching for a site close to Detroit and Ann Arbor to stage a race similar to the one in California last year," said Scott Schultz, General Manager of the track. He is working with the car magazine companies in this area much like he did for his California event. They have some wild ideas with this, but the key is to have fun while running this race. You really have to check out his website for all the details. It's pretty crazy, but we like that and we'll work with Jay and his group to have the track ready for them in September."

24 hours of LeMons in Cali Oct 20-21

The July race is full, but there is a Oct 20-21 race in California, and a Sept 29th and 30th one at Flat Rock near Detroit Michigan. I'm more interested in Michigan because it's nearer. My brother worked there a couple of years and said that imports are not very popular there, something about them sometimes ending up at the bottom of lake Michigan. So I think a "Made in Detroit" Escort GT might be a better choice to race there.

Well I just bought '95 EGT for $400 just needs an engine. Came with a Sony CD system I am sure is worth at least $100, new battery worth $50, and 4 new goodyear tires worth $200. 15'' stock Alloy wheels $150. So I take off those from the price. The car cost me minus $100. I put in my old battery that still works. Drop in an race worthly engine $300. Put in new brakes $100 but doesn't count towards the $500 limit, Get sponsors to donate 2 or 3 sets of good tires, Roll cage $???, helmet, fire resistant suit, extinguisher, race seat none count for the $500 limit. I think I still have $300 left over for race preping the suspension. maybe a set of used lowering springs/struts and poly bushing. Then I would need 4 or 5 drivers with money for entry fees. $100 for each driver and $500 for the car's entry fee. Plus transportation lodging, food, fuel etc etc. $300 - $500 each. If the car would last to the very end of the race, each guy or gal would have about 3 hours of actual track time and a NASCAR racing licence that they give you no questions asked. I'm thinking, keep the car road legal, drive it near the track then take out the side and back glass and head/tail lights etc.

the fact they give out nascar racing licences no question asked doesn't speak highly of the nascar racing community... but hey it'd still be cool to have

I plan on raceing this Sunday at Raceway Park in Shakopee MN in the 4 cyl enduro class. 100 times around a quarter mile banked and paved oval track. I found a good engine and got it in and running. I took out the PS and A/C Most of the interior is removed all the side glass is out. I still have to install a drivers door metal plate for protection from a side collision, chain the doors and bumpers, hood pins, paint the numbers on the car, window net and plenty of more things. It will be a small miricle if I am ready. I have number 8 reserved for the whole season. The car is black so I plan on making the eight look like the eight on a pool eight ball. I think I need to adjust the outside tires to have as much neg camber as poss but I am not sure as I have never done any stock car racing or any motorsport racing ever. Practice is on Saturday I plan doing that. I will start with 45 psi in the front tires and 35 in the rear and go from there using white chalk marks on the tires as a guide to how far they "roll over". I will bring a full air tank, tire gauge, and extra set of wheels and tires. 195/60/15 or 14 is the max size allowed. No 50 profile tire allowed. I think 14" wheels and tires would be the best but I already have 15's. My goal is to finish the race without getting smashed up. I will post some pics as soon as I get time.
