Enduro 4 Cyl Race in MN (was 24hours of LeMons)

The short story is that I was almost ready to go race and I had a few things to finish on the car and my friend was helping me install the racing seat belts decided to drill a hole and he punctured the gas tank. With one hour to go it was not possible to repair in time. We still took the car there, watched the race, and hung out in the pits. It's one more month to the next race. So there will be time to do a few more things. The recently installed engine doesn't run perfect. It seems doggy untill 4-5K RPM. I swapped over the plugs, wires, and stock Air Meter from my car and nothing really changed. It isn't making the power I hoped for yet. I guess I can keep swaping parts untill I run across the problem.

There were plenty of Mazdas and Escorts in the field of 45 cars. A 323 finished 100 laps first but was disqualified in the post race inspection. I saw a first gen Protege on 14" alloys. A yellow escort wagon with a 1.9 engine was leading by four laps on his 90th lap when he had to pit. I wonder how a 88 hp engine hauled a wagon around so fast. He didn't have to do a post race inspection because he was out of the money.

Does anybody know if any 2nd Gen escort gas tank will work? Protege gas tank bolt in?

I found this site about 4 cyl stock car racing. www.purestock.tv

yea, all the 2nd gen escort tanks are interchangeable. The only difference is the gt one holds like a gallon more than the lx one. so what are the rules? cause i have a feeling that my 2nd gen egt with only poly swaybar endlinks would do pretty well in something like that. Towards the end of it's life of course

Raceway Park in Shakopee MN, near Valley Fair, has monthly 4 cyl enduro races.

Elko is south of the Twin Cities close to Hwy I 35 and Lakeville MN
It has super hornet races, 4 cyl FWD, almost every week. This Sat. it is only $1 to get in. Usually admission is $12. I plan on going just to watch Sat. They have practice on Thursday nights and you might be able to get into the pits free then. There website says practicing costs $20 per car but more than one person share the car. You might have to race at that track to practice though.
ELKO! Racing • Eve of Destruction® • Drive-In - Family fun since 1965. Located in Elko New Market, MN - Elko Speedway is the Midwest Center For Speed. Located 10 minutes south of Lakeville off I35.

                  Memorial Day Race Report

Today was my first race. I procrastinated and ended up working on the car right up to the last minute. Most of the guys who said they would help me either were hung over or something. But one friend was there to help. Being a little late, I ended up starting in about the 60th position for the 100 lap race. In the first half of the race, everyone has to pit after 50 laps, I managed to avoid crashing. The car was a little tail happy, the rear end would slide out but was manageable. My friend called me on my cell phone and told me that I was 4 laps down from the lead. The second half there was a lot fewer cars, and I could concentrate more on going fast instead of avoiding collisions. I finished in the money, $50 Woo Whoo! in tenth place moving up 50 places. I think that newer tires in the rear will help the oversteer, because they are almost bald. The engine was completely stock, I removed the AC, PS, and Cat. I could have removed the muffler, and used a cold air intake as long as it has a paper filter, but I didn't have time.

sounds like you did pretty good, going 60 to 10th. despite not having everything setup right, I'd call that a win
No car! I soldz it. Now I have a truck. I like it, but apparently it has a hard time keeping up with a slightly modified 4WD protege with half the hp. Neat.

Oh man we got in on that hornet enduro thing a while back. Ain't no better $ to fun ratio in racing. We had a grand total of 200 bucks in our 1982 Toyletta Commoda station wagon. We used a toilet seat on the roof as our number placard but it wouldn't pass tech....so off that came and down goes the green flag...It was hard to concentrate cuz I was laughing so hard most of the time. Oh, so that guy wants my line eh? Well, he's gonna hafta drive through 2300 hunnert pounds of fullbore Toyletta to git thar....At one point as I'm getting the tail out to make the hairpin onto the back straight, someone plows into the RR qtr panel and up and over I go. I was laughing so hard my sides ached. Landed on the wheels, got it into the pits, and that just happened to be during the midrace break! Service crew diagnoses a very bent steering arm. We borrow a torch and get it nice and redhot, and start shoving the wheel around till it's pretty much pointed the same general direction as the other one, and off we go some more! We finished that race. No idea on finishing position. We didn't give a happy goddamn about that, the novelty of thrashing the crap outta a "racecar" and simply not caring, was enough for us. That damn car went on to finish 2 other hornet races, and 1 other 300 lap enduro, and it *still runs*. It needs an alternator. Once we get around to installing it, we'll try to finish it off but I think it'll outlast us all.
Best of luck in your hornet efforts. Whatever you do, don't take it too seriously. Some o' them boys were waaaay too serious about this scene, and it was real hard not to just laugh out loud at em. Good taste prevailed though, cuz it ain't fun to make fun o' folk whose family trees ain't got no branches, if you git my drift.

Thanks, and yes some people do get too serious and get too wound up. I am there to have fun, and to me that is pushing the car and me close to the limit.
Also part of the fun to me is doing it in the same kind of car that I drive on the steet. I also liked the fact that some guys at the track came over, shook my hand, said nice race and one offered to buy my car. It seems like the EGT is getting more of the respect it deserves.
