Plastic Gas Tank Repair Escort GT

A small puncture from a sharp edged tool was accidently made into the top of my gas tank on my Escort GT enduro race car. A friend did it trying to help me make a mounting point for a racing harness while I wasn't watching him.

I didn't know the tank was made out of plastic at first and thought the plastic was just something between the car floor and the tank and started cutting at it with knife. It's tough stuff and luckily soon figured it out before much more damage. A search of the internet showed reports of using a soldering iron to melt the plastic back together. I have one and that's what I used. It held up to a 100 lap race in the hot sun. I took off the gas tank cap after the race and the gas fumes where under pressure as normal. I don't know if Proteges etc have plastic tanks or not.

mazdas have metal tanks (sucks for them, they tend to rust ). i would still replace that tank... glad to hear you got it working for the race though

I think offroading I'd rather have a metal tank, would handle all the rocks I bounce over better. but the weigh savings in a plastic tank....lol I like my metal tank!
No car! I soldz it. Now I have a truck. I like it, but apparently it has a hard time keeping up with a slightly modified 4WD protege with half the hp. Neat.

physically yes, the tank should fit... but the sending unit is much different. you would have to use the ford sending unit, and therefore your gas gauge would read wrong.

On the VW Golf rally car I built last year, I used two plastic tanks. I split a crappy one about half way up the main body, then followed the filler neck about 2/3 the way up it. This doubled up tank works as a fantasic and cheap skid plate, no issues in 6 or so races with a top two wheel drive competitor behind the wheel, ie, he's faster than half of the turbo awd guys. I plan on doing the same on my Escort, if I can get a yard to sell me one, they don't seem to like to do so.

Some yards drain the tank by punching a hole in it, could be a reason not to sell. But a small hole wouldn't be a problem in your case using it as a skid plate.
