97 escort manual tranny stuck in gear

yall know anything i can do besides replace the tramission or the car? lol was out runnin errands for bout 2 hours driving normally with the A/C on during the way back and it got me back fine. next thing i hop in the car, the transmission was being weird like it was shifting out of place. then i parked it and turned it off, threw it in 1st. now its stuck in first.

its not my car but it sux that i was the last one to drive it when it happened =\

have you checked the shifter linkage? maybe something came loose or got jammed in there? the transmission and shifter mechanism is nearly identical to that of the protege, if you have any experience with it.

      does it still drive?
if so, does the speedo still work?

if it felt like it was shifting out of place, maybe one of the synchro rings broke, and is blocking the control rod, or it could be a broken speedo gear doing the same thing.

Or, it could be the diff breaking, and doing the same thing.

could even be a bent shift fork, or the like.

I'd say drain the tranny fluid, and check for metallic or plastic particles.

      good luck, man!

same thing happened 2 my 323, i pulled the sh!t out of the shifter and it finally popped out, I thought i was gonna break the shifter, try it and see if it pops out, it was rough shifting into first and second but then it went back 2 normal like nothing happend, i just parked the car and i'm gettin ready 2 do my BP swap

it came out. i had to pull on it a bit, was scared of breaking something. it seems to shift like normal before, but i have not tried driving the car. the car shifted weird to begin with. it was hard putting it into R usually and sometimes u have to try twice to put it into a gear. maybe i'll try driving it tmr to see if it acts up...

how much do these trannys run used? i know new ones are prolly worth more than the car. ha!

try a junkyard... probably $50-$150 depending on the place, unless you have one of those super overpriced junkyards.

Stop the car completely. Put it into 1st then reverse (don't let go of the clutch after going into 1st!) it'll help alot. Apparently reverse doesn't have a syncro so things line up better when going into 1st first!

ahh i see. well its been shifting okay i suppose? i went thru 1 to 5 while the cars stopped. its about to be drivin in about 30 minutes. i guess we'll find out if something got effed up =[ so are most transmission built without a syncro for reverse?

update.... when we were trying to back out of the parkin space, it just kept grinding everytime we tried to put it in reverse.. sounds like bad news

the transmissions on the 97 escorts are totally different from the 90-94 proteges arent they?

Yes, the 97 escorts use a ford-based (SPI) engine block bolt pattern rather than a mazda engine block bolt pattern.

BUT the internals are very similar. its a mazda trans with a ford bellhousing pattern.
