i am running MS2 and it works great as well.

MS1 has a few more options available for use right now (boost control, wasted spark with stock disty), but MS2 has higher resolution and LOTS more options will be available in the future. it also has a better accelleration enrichment algorithm (x-tau).

either one will work just fine pretty much... until you get down to the real nitty gritty. thats when you'll decide about one or the other.

You can get most of these working right on a BP. We picked the V3 (actually V3.57, but that was a labor saving choice) for the Miata MSPNP, and it's worked well enough for a 250 hp turbo motor.

MS2 extra is available, & runs. some folks out there are using it with good results.
I say MS2 is the better route.

                you don't need a VAF, it's just a restriction.

You WILL need a wideband though. It's foolhardy to try and tune your car without one. The Innovate Motorsports LC-1 unit is 200 dollars, including the sensor, and it does a really good job at it, plus the outputs are programmable, meaning you can set them up easily for the Megasquirt, as well as any gauge you put on it.

The MS-II is a really good choice. It's far superior to the MS-I hardware wise and with the release of MS-II/Extra, it's superior firmware wise as well.

I'm currently testing and tuning the MS-II/Extra beta code, and it seems to be working out pretty well. I've accumulated about 40 pages in my tuning notebook so far on the ins and outs of tuning the BP so if you need help getting it working well, I can help you out there.

Im running the MSI extra high res code with good results ... I'd say MSII is the right thing to do as well, especially if the extra code is stable.
