    Coolant temp gauge

When I swapped all my GTX stuff into the 4wd the coolant temp reads hot (I mean all the way at the top) with the key 'on' before I even start the engine. I'm guessing that's not normal? What did I do wrong?

do you have the right plug connected to the gauge sender? there are two plugs right in that part of the harness that look identical... one is a ground the other is the gauge sender.

It's a little black connector that attaches to a spade, right? Not the one on the thermostat.

thats what i'm saying, maybe you mixed them up. because if you ground the signal wire for the temp gauge it will read full hot.

It looks like the right wire. It's B/O which is right according to the FSM. I'll switch them and see what happens.

Also when I connect my primary cooling fan it is always on with the key at 'on'. So that seems to indicate at least 2 of 3 coolant temp sensors think the engine is always hot (gauge, fan) and I don't know about the one for the injection system.

well the clt fan one is unique, and simply grounds out at a certain temperature... so if the fan is always on i'd guess the sensor is bad.

your gauge sender could be bad too, you could always swap it out for the one from your B8...

There are so many different coolant temp sensors... The one for the fan is at the top of the radiator, right? And the one for the gauge with its ground looking connector. And the one on the thermostat, I don't know what it's for exactly. The one with a green plug on the block is for the injection system.

Are there any more? Am I wrong about any of these? How many of them interchange with the B8 and BP?

              Thanks for all the help.

on the radiator? the fords dont have one there... not sure what that would be for. heres what i can tell you though:

ovalish plastic sensor, one wire plastic plug, in thermostat housing = fan switch (grounds out at a particular temp)

tiny round sensor, single wire spade plug, front corner of the block below the disty = dash gauge sender

rectangular green 2 wire sensor/plug on the side of the head = fuel injection

OK that helps a lot. I changed the gauge sender and the radiator one for the B8 and it made no difference. Do the others interchange as well? If they do, I'll try the thermostat sensor next.

Oh, the ground won't reach the gauge sender on mine.

It's beginning to look to me like I may have crossed some wires in the harness. I hope not.
