    diff lock diagnosis

alrigh im just curious... its not that big of a deal right now but my diff lock doesnt work, it just blinks. I dont even know where to start, i dont know how difficult or simple the system is, hell i think my biggest problem is i dont fully understand the system so i dont even know what could be causing it.

    thanks guys

the light just blinks? mine did that only when it couldn't engage, when moving too fast for it, or the teeth didn't mesh right. rocking the car with the clutch solved that. If that doesn't solve it, I can stare at the diff lock diagram in the fsm till I think of a solution lol. its possible the diff lock sensor switch isn't triggering. run 12V direct to the lock motor (red/yellow wire locks; red/white frees) and see if it locks in.
No car! I soldz it. Now I have a truck. I like it, but apparently it has a hard time keeping up with a slightly modified 4WD protege with half the hp. Neat.

In free mode our center diff is a viscous diff so it does allow power tranfer to change between front and rear. With the diff locked it is just that a 50/50 split front and rear. The US trannies are 50/50 front/ rear either way where the J-spec ones are 47front/53rear when you lock the diff then it is 50/50.
If you want to lock your diff try the rocking back and forthto see if it actuates. Don't drive on it locked for to long unless you are on extremly slippery surfaces or you will just blow the tranny

Looking at the shop manual, the BG awd protege tranny is the very same unit as what they stuck the BF GTX with, ie open centerdiff, not viscous, and made of popsicle sticks and used chewing gum. The BPT GTX/GTR trans with the VLSCD, doesn't run a center difflock although the shaft is there (you can lock it manually if you really want to but there's no difflock motor installed). When you do The Swap, you'll want to change over to a BPT box anyhow so I wouln't worry overmuch that your difflock setup doesn't work. The probable casue of your difflock unit not working is this: the magnets of the difflock motor, which turns the actuator rack-n-pinion that moves the difflock shaft in and out, are glued to the thin metal case surrounding the armature windings. When the glue wears out from heat and age, the magnets fall off, sticking to the coil windings and that's that. I **** you not. On my GTX I fought that issue, tracing the problem forward from the switch all the way down to the motor and then taking the ****ing thing all the way down to components before I found that little problem (and if you think tearing down the difflock motor is a service item that shows up in the factory service manual, well, you poor misguided soul you...), and figured out how to repair the sonofabitch. The next tranny that went into that car, when it started doing the same goddamn juju, I just went right to the source, re-anchored the ****ing magnets with industrial crazy glue, and it worked just fine but by then I was disgusted with BF running gear and did the full BPT swap. If any of you have need of a totally gone-through and cleaned out fully working difflock actuator assembly, it's still in my shop but I want at least 200 bucks for the grief it caused me. Right now I'm keeping it in a visible place... for the same reason I keep a crumpled fender hanging on my wall from my last off in the poor old rally GTX, a constant reminder that Murphy is alive and well and his Law is at work constantly.
'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and
'90 AWD Protege, yet another GTR swap, Open class rallycar with a Toyota GT4 gearbox swap, thus crossing the line between hobby and mental illness. And a Brabus E55 K8, removing all doubt.

Apologies for my mis info, this is a correct statement for the US version. For some reason when I made my post I thought I had seen somewhere that the US tranny was a viscous center diff not an open, my bad
