    GTR ECU or go standalone

I have heard many things about the GTR ECU being mapped to 19psi 23 psi and other numbers. I have a full GTR w/ VAF and the ECU. 460cc injectors and so forth. Everything is running fine, but what can I do to get more. Boost is set around 16. What would I need to do to be able to safely turn it up a little further without having to worry too much. Timing, Octane, and so forth. Have ic also not that it matters too much.

What would be the biggest benefits of switching to standalone? I know it will run a little better can run more boost but what numbers are we talking about?

I do not have a wideband O2 at this time. Will be in the near future.

Sorry for all the blah blah.

You could probably safely turn up the boost to about 20 without changing any thing else. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the VJ-23 turbo(GTR turbo) is only good for about 23 psi. A lot of people are talking that you will start maxing out your 460cc injectors turning the boost up to 23 psi. So if you were to go stand alone you could go to a bigger injector and tune for it. You can go with a piggy back style unit for bigger injectors as well, but then you are dependant on the GTR ecu's timing controlls that way. I am currently running a GTR ecu and 460cc injectors with the GTX (VJ-20) turbo. I have a RX-7 turbo II VAF and have an Apexi SAFC for fuel control. I run at or around the max of the VJ-20 turbo, which is 16psi

imo your best bet would be to hook up the wideband and take it to a dyno... keep turning up the boost and watching your afr's until you find a point where things start to lean out, and you'll then know the limit of the stock management. you could always run 550cc injectors with a SAFC and the GTR ecu if you dont want to go for a full standalone, this should give you all the headroom you need.

personally i am a big fan of standalone, but it does take a fair bit of research and time to learn how to set it up and tune it properly. i would reccomend megasquirt 2, there are many people even just on this board running MS2 on the bp (including myself )

ehehehheheh, and I'm developing a megasquirt board version of my own specifically designed to be used with our cars

Supposedly the VAF will max out at around 18-19psi, so after that the ecu wont know to add more fuel and bad stuff happens.

But bigger injectors and a safc should provide a solution for higher boost.

it's all going to depend on what your turbo's CFM rating is at whatever boost you're running, not the pressure. It's the FLOW that's pushing open the vane. In all likelihood, the turbo that they use on the GTR engine is small enough that at the boost you're looking at, you'd still be okay. If you went to a bigger turbo, probably not so much.

Best thing to do would be to cut away a tiny amount of insulation on the wire from the VAF to the ECU and stick a multimeter on it. If it's getting awfully close to 5 volts at the pressures you're running, then you're pushing it too hard. Trick is, you'd need to do this with the engine loaded, so it's best to solder a wire to that wire from the VAF, feed the other end of the wire through the firewall, and then hook the multimeter up to that inside.

It sounds like a lot of work but it really should only take you about 15 minutes of your time, and will tell you exactly what you need to know.

EDIT: and pulling whatever you've got on the VAF off afterwards and moving the vane by hand (with the power on, but the car not started) while measuring the voltage on that wire will tell you how it responds... I forgot to mention that the VAF's voltage curve is probably not linear.

I believe that the more the vaf is open the closer the voltage goes to 0, but the principle is correct.

The GTR turbo will flow more air than the GTR fuel system can support. On a GTR motor, 17-18 psi on the VJ23 and on stock management is about all the fuel system will handle.

So do I need to go to safc, 55cc inj, and a wideband? Or is there a more cost effective way to do this for a better end result.

lately I screwed up the #4 piston. You can see the top ring on the piston. It leaned out really bad although the others looked ok. i can get another single from CS since the cylinder walls look really good. Or I can save up and get the weisco set although I would need to pull the engine again to bore it out. With the higher compression, what would I expect to see? I just don't want to see this happen again, and I am still really not all that sure why it happened. Ideas and thoughts where the money should be spent now.

I think a dual feed fuel rail should solve your problem in #4 piston Steve.

I dont think the 91 octane you get out by you dosent help either.

usually its #1 that would lean out due to a fuel feed problem... #4 is going to have the most available fuel pressure.

                              So WTF you think happened?????

Oh another thing , may not be related. On the 26 head when I would start it up it would chatter like a V8 with the valve lash way off. Then I would rev it once and it would go away. I know that this is common in many engines but it was not like this at first and seemed to get worse and worse.

BTW when you gonna get that tranny in frank.
