if rules allow, and you're up to the task, a manual tranny helps alot. what can you do with the exhaust? put a 95 EGT manifold on it, its tubular while still being "stock", nets a few extra. attempt the "cut" intake manifold mod. that might take alot of asking around and pleading to find out exactly how its done. that's good for a few more. If you feel up to a decently difficult one, the exhintake mod (exhaust cam on intake side). it takes some metal work (nothing hard) and patience, but nets a few more hp.

I don't know how legal these mods are under the rules, but they are ideas for small boosts in "stock" power.
No car! I soldz it. Now I have a truck. I like it, but apparently it has a hard time keeping up with a slightly modified 4WD protege with half the hp. Neat.

the rules are pretty open when it comes to exhaust so i have been looking for a header but i dont know what would be best

Do away with your power steering. A lightweight flywheel would be hidden.

trying to squeez power out of the 1.8 na is really hard without boost .. but if you really want to do this.. just look around the n/a high hp miatas.. the mods on them should be similar to ours

as said above, even just a 5 speed swap will really liven up the car. autos suck up a lot of torque that a 4 cylinder doesnt have to spare!

deck your head(raise compression), get oversized valves, adjustable cam gears, what everyone else said. everything but the lightweight flywheel and 95 exhaust manifold are done to my 92 egt.

most likely with all the mods you can do, you're going to hit about 150-160whp. that's being generous too. aim for 140whp, and you can hit it with the above listed mods.

Some mods that could be hidden:

                            Exintake cam swap
                            Lightened flywheel
                            2000 miata 9:5 pistons
                            Port and polished head
                            Gasket matched ports
Bpt323's intake manni mod(ask him how to get the "how-to")
                            Rx7 vaf
                            95egt exaust manni
Since you can do basically whatever you want with the exaust you sould grab a pacesetter header for the escort gt and run about a 2.25 in exaust all the way back. Just use a quality muffler. You might be able to squesse 15whp out of that but as stated b4, its kind of tough to get power n/a out of the bp. Boost is easy.

I am running a 95 EGT at a 1/4 mile Paved track. I have the car stripped down as much as possible. I recently placed 7th out of 45 cars in a 100 lap race getting a $100 prize. I could have done at least 2 or 3 places better because I spun out on the last lap. In my rules the engine is supposed to be stock from the intake mani to the exhaust mani. I advanced the timing and use premium fuel mixed with 110 octane racing gas. I have an adapter on the VAF, not RX7 yet, for a cone air filter. My rules say filter must be paper so I took a Taurus or V6 contour rectangular filter and bent it into a cylinder.
There are after-market cams you can use or, as mentioned, a modified exhaust cam in the intake cam's place. But for that mod you need a easy to spot adjustable timing gear or some skilled mods to a stock gear. Subscribe to this forum and you get info on how to mod your intake mani. My brakes are stock, suspension is ZX2 struts and shocks from the JY plus Poly swaybar links front and rear. I have a 4 point roll bar with the braces going to the rear alongside the strut towers. But you are on dirt so your suspension most likely needs to be different.

Somebody above said it is hard to get power NA out of the BP. Well the mods I did made a noticeable difference. And I race with another EGT that has placed 2nd and 3rd. So I would say that for a 4 cylinder NA car cheap enough to go on a circle track with 45 other cars, the EGT/Pro LX is a very good choice.
