    BP distributor... optical or magnetic?

so yesterday i realized that my GTR motor has the magnetic pickup distributor. ive heard a lot of people talking crap on them. is it worth my time to switch to the optical one? i'm sure one of my three spare motors must have one...

When my original disty went I switched to the optical. I can look at the number that you need. Its only 1 letter or number.I noticed the idle was smoother with the optical.

well its easy to tell them apart, so no worries on the part number. just wondering if its actually worthwhile. my idle is a little rough but i think that has more to do with my injectors being almost 2.5 times the size of a stock BP.. lol

When you have the cap off instead of a....how do I explain.......basically its fully covered and you can't see anything under the cover that's under the rotor. On normal ones you can see what's under cause there's 4 things that come out of the middle and overlap the sides. Trust me you can tell the difference. When I get to the shop I'll pop my cover off and snap a pic. And I'll grab that extra letter. Iirc is a b at the end of the numbers.

There are many things causing the rough idle Jon. I noticed that my car's idle won't be smooth unless I idle at 12.5-13 AFR with such a big exhaust and 550s. There is some theory on why this is and it has to do with how the MS fires the injectors as well. It also helps to wire your injectors 1&3, 2&4 together and push the timing a bit higher at idle (I run 16 degrees timing at idle). The disty is likely not the problem.

i rewired the injectors when i swapped from 360cc to 550cc, and i'm running 15* timing at idle (which has moved my idle up to ~1200rpm with the screw cranked all the way in).

so youre saying i shouldnt bother swapping the distributor?

If you can find one cheap, go ahead and give it a try, but there may be something else going on. My car idles just fine with 550's. Wish I could point at any one thing and say go fix it, but you might try a little less idle advance, I think I'm at 13 iirc. I think with a standalone, what kind of dizzy you have ain't gonna make much difference, since it's only really being used as a timer. Maybe just maybe your megasquirt would rather have a sharp optical signal as opposed to the slightly fuzzier magnetic signal but I don't know much about megasquirt.

                      ive got motors from...

                      93 5speed tracer LTS
                      95 auto LTS
                      95 5speed EGT

and the dizzy on my 91 EGT looks significantly different externally from the GTR, so that may even be an optical..

As long as you are getting a steady RPM I doubt the disty swap will make a difference. What AFRs are you running at idle?

One has an optical pickup, and one has a hall effect sensor as a pickup. Internally they are different but the signal output should be the same.

my idle AFR bounces around a lot :/

i tried to tune for mid 13's but it pops/sputters sometimes and goes up to 15 or down to 11 or so...
