    Insane Swap?

    Ok, here's the story
My good friend has a 90ish Ford Taurus SHO with the 3.2 liter V6...wow way awsome engine! My friend also has recently lost this car to theft...it was found the night it was stolen, but the boogers who took it were out jumping dunes and literally almost broke the car in half. MY QUESTION THERE FORE IS...
Is it at all possible or feasible to shovel that grand engine into the engine bay of a Prote?
Any information toward this goal will be appreciated! Cries of derision will be read and noted...hollers of stupidity will be rightly assigned a place as deemed correct or mistaken!

Well there is one thing I know. IF it is possible than it would be a very expensive process, but damn that car would be fast. I would think the size of the SHO engine would be too large to fit in the engine bay properly.

It could be done, for ALOT of money. Kinda like the KL swap into a protege. I dont think it would be very worthwhile. It would probably totally throw off the balance of the car, because of the weight. It would probably handle like an Abrams tank. IMHO, not even worth the time, money, or hassle. You could probably get and swap in an GTR engine for that money.

KL would be a lot cheaper than an SHO because the transaxle and mounting required actually exists and doesn't need to be fabricated.

Yes, but I have the whole car...so it would be easy to use the existing parts as jigs to build the neccesary items. plus i didn't have to pay for engine, trans (which i might not keep) or any of the neccesary odds and ends that come with a big swap like this. Plus the engine is not that heavy...I am looking now for that spec...

that 3.2 SHO engine is alot heavier than the 1.8 engine that our cars were made for. Do you have access to alot of machinery?

KL engine is as light as the BP because it's an aluminum block, I've actually heard it was 20lbs lighter.

The KL-ZE is a 2.5l and makes the same power than the yamaha built-sho engine. The SHO makes about 190 right?

Would it be fast to put the SHO engine in the protege? Yes. Would it be feasible? No.

Sell the parts from the car and get the KL-ZE. A few members have done the swap for pretty cheap.

well, as said, motor mounts and axles would have to be custom fabricated. custom axles could run you well over 600 a pop. as for space, you may have to elongate the front or even widen the wheel base.. causing adverse handling issues (not to mention some need for custom made body panels and possibly some parts of the front chasis). also, you'd have to get a complete standalone ECU, test it, tune it yourself on a dyno. you'd also would be looking at the massive retrofitting needed for all of the electrical systems, cooling, and a/c if needed. and a totally different ball park is suspending the car from the added weight of the engine. the stock suspension would either bottom out or you would need something like an air bag suspension.. which i've heard even the most basic systems could run you 1500 to 2000 dollars. there are little things that i'm leaving out, but even doing the work yourself, you'd have to be a mechanic, a welder, a body shop technician and a good background in electrical systems as well would be required. custom fabrication is not a fun thing to be doing, but with all of that work, i cannot imagine you being able to complete all of the custom work to at least make the car FUNCTIONAL for under 10 grand. and don't leave out the need for an entirely new exhaust system and hangers.
                    peace

Actually the SHO motor runs 220 horse, and yes the feasibility so far is not looking good. I am going to do some rough measurements of overall width and height, along with some other points, frame, trans and such, which I havent done yet. BUT...it would still be way cool to pop the hood and see that awsome engine....as far as the fab work, yes I have access to machine shop and tech that would run me very little to nothing. Friends in the business, but overall, if the engine won't fit between the lines, I won't even attempt the swap...if it by any chance does fit in the box, even if its a little high...I believe I might just go for it.
As far as the ignition system and wiring goes, who needs stand alone? I have the ENTIRE harness and computer system, not to mention the fact that I a Ford certified automotive electronics and diagnostics specialist...lol. I will use the stock setup, and maybe (if of course it fits) use a aftermarket setup from MSD. BUT...anyone know where there is a SHO sans engine for sale? Might be easier to just build another SHO huh? Its still fun to contemplate though.....220 stock horse with the ability to make so much more...I check with the SHO shop in Huntington Beach CA and they say "We can make your SHO out-accelerate a Corvette, out-handle a BMW and stop like a Porsche." So then again just keeping it together in a new body may be the choice here....

well i'm one of the members who did that v6 swap, do i feel it was worht it, yup i love the power from it, but i don't recomend the sho engine its actually bigger then the kl, so fitting will be difficult alot of guys on probetalk wanted to do that swap in there car and had the problem of fitmen, my best opinion will be a kl-ze, 200hp 197ft of torque, runing a 10:1:1 compression, higher reving engine and with minimal mods can produce even more power, your best bet is the kl its alot cheaper, and doesn't need any custom work
92 323 with KF-ZE V6 swap done by me, cold air intake, 2 1/4 header back piping, ported throttle body with spacer, NOW FOR SALE FOR $2500, email me at dezznuts59@aol.com

You all are quite right, the engine will not fit without some major bodywork...question answered! Thanks for the responses though! I think we will build another SHO with it, and keep the four banger in the Prote...its not a bad engine as it sits, and a little massageing will bring it into focus.
